Washington Market Park will get new paths next month

So there’s good news and bad news: Washington Market Park will get new asphalt paths in the next several weeks — a project that has been sorely needed since the paths have deteriorated (and they were almost not accessible in spots). Councilman Christopher Marte secured the capital funding for the project in fiscal year 2024, and it is just now getting done. The Parks Department will also replace the benches and do some work that will help drainage on the lawn.

HOWEVER! That means the park will be closed for about six weeks — maybe starting as early as May 5, according to the Friends of Washington Market Park’s most recent newsletter update. (I will confirm the date with Parks press here.) The tennis and basketball courts will remain open, but the playgrounds and entire rest of the park will be closed. They have an update page here.

But wait! There is more good news: the Parks Department is repairing the boat playground now with new supporting posts and eventually new sand that will top off the sand pit. The Friends of Washington Market Park’s recent Tulip Campaign was able to provide additional funds for the project so that all the posts — not just the most deteriorated ones — could be replaced to protect the structure for the future. (You can still donate here.)

  1. Perfect timing! Plus, six weeks in city construction time = at least ten weeks in human time.

  2. So glad to see the funds from the Tulip fundraiser being put to good use!
