Washington Market Park will be closed for the next two months for repairs as of today. (Tough that today happened to be the nicest day of the year…)
The park will get a new perimeter path thanks to city funds dedicated by Councilman Christopher Marte in fiscal year 2024. The Parks Department will also replace the metal benches currently along the path with the iconic World’s Fair benches. And the department is also attempting to replace the drainage pipe that runs under the lawn to the street with the goal to decrease the flooding that takes place on the lawn with most big rains.
The tennis and basketball courts will remain open.. The Friends of Washington Market Park have an update page here.
The Parks Department also recently repaired the boat playground with new supporting posts; when the park reopens that will also be topped off with new sand. The Friends of Washington Market Park’s recent Tulip Campaign was able to provide additional funds for the project so that all the posts — not just the most deteriorated ones — could be replaced to protect the structure for the future. (You can still donate here.)
So grateful to Councilmember Marte and the Parks Department for investing in the long-term health of the park. And to everyone who donated to the Tulip Campaign for helping us go above and beyond with the boat playground repairs. It’s hard to lose access during these beautiful spring days, but excited for what’s ahead. Thank you to the community for your patience and support! 🌷
