J. sent over these images and this note: “And now the question is where in the nabe can you buy newspapers, including those for Sunday??”
Beats me! Maybe the guy in the subway, but he’s not open on Sundays. Does the kiosk on Greenwich in front of B of A have papers?? The grocery store on North End Avenue in Battery Park City? There’s Soho News International, on Prince and Sullivan, but that’s just silly… Comment if you have an idea.
If you don’t want to read the fine print, Morgan’s said they have only been selling papers for customers convenience — which I guess means not for profit. “Due to the increasing rude behavior of some customers cutting in line at the cashier, stealing newspapers and leaving money on the counter, we have decided to no longer sell newspapers.”
(The note added: “We would appreciate it if you would stop asking about newspapers.”)
Sheesh! Touchy.
It certainly is the end of an era. I am all digital for the Times, The Post, Washington Post, Crain’s, but still loved to see the wood (old-timey journalism speak for those giant headlines) on the tabloids’ front pages.
I’ll be following this post to see where Sunday papers are sold. I stare at a computer for work all week, need a physical paper to give my eyes a break.
With respect, I think you buried the lede. If customers weren’t STEALING newspapers and being increasingly rude, this story never happens. I don’t blame Morgan’s and certainly don’t think they are being touchy; I blame the disrespectful, discourteous individuals who have stolen one more simple pleasure from us.
You’re right!
If you want the Sunday paper (or daily) just have it delivered. :-).
How does one get only the Sunday paper delivered? I don’t think that is an option.
Short, definitely worth-it walk to an absolutely _wonderful_ shop that still believes in print and carries nearly everything: Casa Magazines, 22 8th Avenue (at 12th Street). There may be closer places but I always take the opp. to mention Casa.
Duane Reade on Greenwich has newspapers.
Duane Reade has only the NY Post and sometimes the WSJ. They stopped carrying the NYT a while ago. The newsstand on Greenwich St opposite 275 carries newspapers, but the NYT delivery sometimes doesn’t make it there.
The digital NYT with paper weekend delivery is (often) less expensive than the digital-only plan. Though counterintuitive, the NYT makes more money from weekend paper delivery due to the advertising inserts and advert-driven magazine content.
“You can read it in the Sunday papers…
Sunday papers.”
Couldn’t resist this one. I like newspapers in print, at least the Times, at least I did until the Weekend Secton got so skimpy. I like Morgan’s Market, and the Trib Citizen. I live in Florida, but I visit often and used to live in New York (in 1978-79). Back when Reade Street Pub was Morgan’s Grill. Any relation between that long-ago restaurant and the still-there market? Always wondered. Thanks.
I don’t blame them
