I didn’t understand when I did this post about the funding for the new park under the Brooklyn Bridge — $50 million promised by the Adams administration — that the city had also unlocked a big section of the area, including the famed Brooklyn Banks and the majestic arches under the ramps of the bridge. The Banks after a decade of construction, are now open for skateboarders, part of two acres of open space and two cool arched pathways connecting the north and south sides of the bridge — beautiful but completely unprogrammed.
The restoration of the two-story spaces under the ramps is remarkable, revealing the setting what was once a hive of activity a century and a half ago, shutters and all.
And the skateboard part of the park is restored to what the shredders always loved: a massive expanse of smooth brick — no grout — with gentle slopes on the sides.
The park will be maintained by Gotham Park, the non-profit founded by neighbors to advocate for the park; the underpinnings of the bridge itself will be maintained by city Department of Transportation, which has already been recognized for its engineering and architectural efforts by several organizations.

this just makes me pine for the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage to reopen some day…
Gotham Park is actively working to reopen the Arches, would love everyone’s support and advocacy to help us do it! As you can imagine, it’s a Herculean effort. Visit us at gothampark.org
