Bagel Wars! Another bagelry is coming to the neighborhood
W. commented that Tompkins Square Bagels, which first opened on Avenue A in 2011, is coming to the Independence Plaza retail space on Greenwich and Franklin and sure enough: it’s confirmed on Instagram. The company said coming this fall, adding to its four other locations in the city. Chopt is opening next door (in the photo above it is the space on the far left).
Add that to:
- PopUp Bagels, coming in November to Greenwich and Reade
- Modern Bread and Bagels, the gluten free shop coming to Church and Duane
- Apollo Bagels, coming to the former Kings space on Bogardus Plaza
And of course there’s still Zucker’s, which moved to a new space on Chambers in 2023. Ess-A-Bagel opened in Fidi this past spring, and there’s the BPC stalwart: Pick-A-Bagel. Oh and Nala’s Bagels opened on Reade; I will get to that soon.
I guess carbs are back??
From owner Christopher Pugliese on the Tompkins Square Bagels About page: “I got my start [at age 15] at Bake City Bagels in Gravesend Brooklyn, home of what I believe to be the best bagels on the planet. Alumni of this tiny shop have gone on to open some of today’s top bagel spots including The Bagel Hole (Park Slope), The Bagel Store (Williamsburg) and, Court Street Bagels (Cobble Hill). As a kid, I was lucky enough to work along side and learn from the owners of all of those wonderful shops while at Bake City.”
He does say that TSB is “first and for most, a neighborhood shop, built by neighborhood craftsmen and artists, to be enjoyed by neighborhood folks.” As the fifth location, something might be lost by the time he gets to us, but that is certainly a nice sentiment.

I’ve not tried it, or any of the other bagelries mentioned, so I have no basis of comparison….I used to frequent Black Seed in the East Village, which had great bagels.
And there’s Brooklyn Bread on Greenwich and Murray! Carbs are back and I’m here for it. I don’t mind a bit of competition in the neighborhood. Maybe it will drive down prices so I’m not spending so much on a bagel with cream cheese.

Both Apollo and Tompkins will have insufferable lines of younger folks eager to share their breakfast with social media followers.
Let’s hope both locations allow for pick up options!

Amazing news! 2 years ago all we had in the neighborhood was Zuckers (which has seen a sharp decline in quality over the last couple years).
Bring on the bagel wars!!!
Maybe I’m prejudiced by being their neighbor, but I think Zucker’s bagels are great. wonderful veggie spreads and morning glory muffins also. But then I grew up with great Jewish deli’s in Jersey, not high end Tribeca palates.
Better bagels than weed shops and empty store fronts.
