Sneak Peek: Artion Bakery and Cafe

A new Greek bakery has taken over the embattled space at at 293 Church between White and Walker — and maybe this will allow neighbors to actually enjoy something in that spot for the first time in ages. Plus I don’t think there is anything similar in the neighborhood.

(The most recent use of this storefront was the Revolving Store; but before that was L’Entree, which was eventually closed by the marshal but not before ticking everyone off for noise and what seemed like an illegal Airbnb.)

Artion Cafe just has an Instagram profile with no hours listed, does not seem to have a digital footprint, but Google reports their hours are 7:30a to 6:30p. It has two siblings in the city: The Bakery Room on East 55th Street, and Artion Bakery Patisserie in Astoria, which opened in 2021.

We popped in for coffee and a pastry, but I will go back soon for something off the menu. In the meantime, this seems like a great stop if you are assigned dessert as a house guest, since the cookie selection was excellent and the baklava is a classic.

I brought home the mini spinach pies: excellent once heated through so the feta melts.

More soon.

  1. Agree to disagree with the review. While excited to try a much needed new spot/cafe in the area, the food unfortunately was a miss all around. All their staples were a bland miss.

    Pi Bakerie is infinitely better.

    • I’m in agreement with you, the stuff didn’t taste fresh or have an authentic flavor to it. It’s likely because they ship their pastries from Astoria to this location, and we all know pastries are best served fresh. Nothing worse than something that’s been sitting in a case for hours, especially at $5+ an item
