The Starbucks on Greenwich and Franklin is closing

T. sent word this morning: the Starbucks in Independence Plaza, on Greenwich and Franklin/N. Moore is closing by the end of the week — which I think means today.

The door had what has to be a stock memo from the Starbucks Coffee Company: “We know this may be hard to hear because this isn’t just any store. It’s your coffeehouse — a place woven into your daily rhythm, where memories were made and where meaningful connections with our partners [I believe this means employees in this context] grew over the years. We are deeply grateful for the community that’s been built here.”

The store opened there in February 2024. At the time, Vornado Realty Trust, the landlord, said they had taken a 10-year lease.

In the past year we have lost two other Starbucks: the one inside 32 Avenue of the Americas at Sixth and Walker, and the one on Broadway and Reade. And T. noted that the company announced that it is closing 1 percent of stores. This from CNN:

“Starbucks announced Thursday that it will close 1% of its stores in North America this month. The closures – and layoffs of 900 corporate employees – are part of a $1 billion restructuring plan. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the stores it will shut weren’t ‘what our customers and partners expect’ or weren’t making money.”

If you need your fix, there is still West Broadway and Leonard; Chambers and West Broadway; Lafayette and Worth; and Church and Murray. And that’s just Tribeca! There are another 18 or so in Fidi and Battery Park City (and a couple with restricted access, like Pace and Citibank).

  1. no…. this was one of the nicest Starbucks and staff there are so friendly! so sad this is going 😢

  2. I wonder if this was one of the unionized Starbucks locations. I’ve seen unconfirmed reports that the closings are disproportionately impacting the stores with a union.

  3. There are so many good coffee places nearby that this will not be missed. Still, strange that less than a year in they are shutting the place down. I’m sure Vornado was charging premium rents that made it somewhat expensive even for Starbucks.

  4. Thoughts and prayers. But seriously, Starbucks is horrible coffee. Support your local coffee co–there are so many good options nearby! Interlude, Kaffe, Rigor Hill, Laughing Man, Olives…the list goes on.

  5. The starbucks on Broadway and Reade also closed.
