Mamdani wins mayoral race; Cuomo takes Tribeca

Zohran Mamdani was elected the next mayor of New York City tonight, in a race called by the AP at around 9:30p with 75 percent of the vote in and no other path to victory for other candidates.

Doing the math on our nine election districts in Tribeca — from Vesey to Canal, West Street to Centre/Broadway — former governor Andrew Cuomo took 57 percent of the vote (with 97 percent of the votes reported). Mamdani took 34 percent. Some EDs voted as much as 71 percent for Cuomo. (See The Times interactive here.)

That puts Tribeca in the same group as the far side of Staten Island, Kew Gardens, South Williamsburg, parts of the Upper East Side and Coney Island.

  1. No suprise there. Tribeca is a neighborhood packed with conservatives and centrists.

  2. good to here. We don’t need this city going backwards to Deblasio on steroids.

  3. Little consolation, but at least the majority of our neighbors are rational human beings who love America, democracy and capitalism.

  4. So disappointing to see Tribeca lean towards Cuomo. Guess majority of our neighbors love themselves and their pocketbooks, vs wanting an affordable (and Trump free) city for everyone.

    • Not to mention tacit or active approval of the incredibly gross gutter racism the campaign engaged in. Cuomo has no shame.

    • Agreed — I was disappointed to see the break-down from my voting precinct. I very proudly voted for Mandami and am excited that he won!

      • So, Mandami voters, what is it about his policies that you like? Free Busses? MTA owns that one and good luck. legalized prostitution? can’t wait for the action on pier 25,26. higher RE taxes for “white” neighborhoods, last time I checked Tribeca is in those crosshairs. rent freezes? I don’t think those will apply to $15,000 a month 2 bedrooms in Tribeca. I Plaza has very few non market apps. left. Social workers showing up instead of police, what could go wrong? not enforcing crimes, wonderful. higher Corp. taxes? NY already losing jobs. ad the best one of all, close prisons. I’m sure I missed some things, maybe even some positive normal policies.

    • MME – Agreed.

Many of us do not vote with our wallets, rather for a more perfect union.

  5. LOL the Trump Derangement Syndrome is still going strong!

  6. FiDi voted for Mamdani! Who’s carrying Downtown now, Tribeca? (Hint: it’s not your yoga mat)

  7. Proud Cuomo voter here. Can’t wait to start seeing the weed shops and homeless roaming the streets of Tribeca. Anyone who says that they are disappointed to see tribecians vote for Cuomo must be those on section 8 housing and lucky they winded up in Tribeca.

    • What a disgusting take. I hope you never need food or housing assistance.

    • I have seen apparently homeless people almost daily on the streets of Tribeca for years. On January 2 I expect you will be attributing their presence to Mamdani. Please, please, please—don’t.

      • Mamdani didn’t put the homeless and fake bag illegals on the streets of Tribeca, but he might perpetuate their presence, based on his campaign bravado.

      • There are very few homeless here in Tribeca. I have lived in Tribeca since 1987. And the few that are here, have been here for years and are recognized by our neighbors, and harmless. There may be some unfamiliar faces now and then, but it is very minimal. So yes, if there is an influx of homeless, I will blame Mamdani.

    • Sandra,
Some of us in Tribeca are compassionate and see everyone on the street as a human being, regardless of whether they appear to have a home or to be unhoused.

  8. Way to embarrass us, TriBeCa ! Anyways, congrats to Mr. Mamdani !

  9. Wow, Tribeca voted like Staten Island- so proud (not). Seriously, after reading the TC comments over the years, I think some of you are not meant for urban living. Tribeca was settled by artists and now it’s filled with entitled 1%ers that, in anonymous comments, let your classism show. You hide your racism better. Cuomo was an incompetent nepo baby governor who resigned to avoid prosecution and would have been a worse mayor. Cuomo was endorsed by Trump and Elon! It’s time for a new generation to take over City Hall, and I’m excited (not scared) by this new chapter. Do I think Mamdani is perfect? No, but I rest easy knowing he’ll be 100% better than Cuomo.

  10. It’s damning that TC allows plenty of racist and insulting language but when someone calls it out it gets deleted.

  11. Let’s give ZM a chance. Most of what I read above is amped up misinformation at best, and classism and racism at worst. Tribeca is out of step on this one – this is clear from the maps of the entire city.

    • Amped up misinformation, classism and racism is literally the platform that Mamdani ran on. But sure, it’s the people who rejected this platform who embody these things. Please, please, please lay down an argument for Mamdani that isn’t rooted in misinformation, classism and racism. I would love to hear it.

      • You think rich people are a race don’t you?

      • Talg, please let me know what misinformation lies in his policies?

        1. White neighborhoods should pay more in RE taxes (quote)
        2. Legalize Prostitution
3.Defund the police (Police are racist and don’t create safety)
        4.Free Busses-created a $700 million hole for MTA, He can’t do it
5.creation of community safety-$800 million cost, dangerous
6.Close Rikers in 2027-Other Community jails won’t be ready
7.Won’t enforce QOL crimes-Good Bye Duane Reade, Welcome back Canal Street Counterfeiters.
8.Tax the rich-Do you believe it ends there?
What in this guys DNA and Policies is attractive to anyone.

    • Yes. Alexandra – agreed.

    • Happy to be moving out of our Tribeca loft after 46 years. This neighborhood has become toxic after starting out as a welcoming refuge. Enough already

  12. I voted for Mamdani after having voted for Cuomo in the Primary.
Cuomo ran a horrible campaign and.after both Trump and Stephen Miller endorsed the former governor I was very proud of my Mamdani vote, as were so many of the old time Tribecans I met at my poll site. But I was especially proud of the young
voters who were so fired up for our new young Mayor.

  13. I, for one, am excited to see a mayor-elect who clearly loves the city, recognizes what makes it work, and reflects its beautiful contradictions and diversity. There is a whole, living, breathing city outside of Tribeca, Manhattan below 110th St, and Brownstone Brooklyn.

It will also be nice sending a corrupt, bullying sex pest who hates the city and doesn’t live here into the dustbin of history. And watching Melissa DeRosa and Rich Azzopardi have to eat it is just a cherry on the top.

    • Zohran is the best candidate date. And Cuomo is a corrupt sexual predator who caters to real estate, corporate and Trump interests

      • People keep asking for a positive case for voting for Zohran (it’s quite easy to make, in my opinion), but what’s the case for Cuomo? We rightfully forced him out of office, and now people are excited to bring him back? He doesn’t care about us at all, why do we care about rehabilitating his career?

And crickets when I point out how absolutely gross his last few weeks of campaigning were. He openly insulted millions of voters and citizens with his unveiled racism.

        • @malcolm: I get your schadenfreude about Cuomo and his forlorn enablers. But just as Mamdani did in his victory speech, let’s put them in the rear-view. He, and we, won. Now let’s focus on helping Mayor Mamdani achieve the fair, affordable, city-for-all he campaigned on. And to let *that* be the answer to the naysayers.

Please savor NYT columnist Mara Gay’s column that just dropped this morning: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/07/opinion/zohran-mamdani-coalition-voters.html. It resonated with me as I know it will with you.

          • Thanks, Mr. Komanoff.

You’re right, onwards! I did indeed enjoy MG’s column, and thanks for sharing for all here.

          • Mr Komanoff,
Mara Gay noted Mayor Mamdani’s connection with taxi and Uber drivers.

It is my understanding that Mayor Mamdani significantly favors expanding the bicycling infrastructure and reducing vehicles.

If that is correct, then taxi and Uber drivers may be quite unhappy.
Taxi drivers especially bear the brunt of closed streets and shrunken streets.

  14. Not surprised to see anyone opposed to Momdani called out as a “racist” by elite Tribecans with luxury beliefs.

  15. Then I voted for Mamdani and I think he will be good for the city. I am also happy FiDi voted for him. I teach at Pace U. and the students were excited for a young candidate who spoke about affordability issues that impact younger people.

  16. Last time I checked majority still rules in this country. If you don’t like the election result or Mamdani’s policies, you’re free to move elsewhere. New York City will be just fine. In fact, we will thrive in the long run like we always have. This City is just so incredibly resilient. This election was about turning the page and a generational shift away for the politics of old (because the politics of the last 40-50 years have really not done much for our society as a collective). It’s time to embrace change.

If you look at the Wall Street Journal’s article entitled “The Voters Who Propelled Mamdani to Victory,” you will see that it was voters under 50, who make less than $300,000, and are non-white which overwhelmingly supported Mamdani. That is the majority in this City (and the people who make it run day-to-day) and Mamdani’s message of affordability, inclusiveness, and his gifted politics skills resonated with those groups and, frankly, with many of Tribeca’s millionaires.

As my parents told me, there are a lot of lessons to be learned when you lose. Look in the mirror Cuomo supporters.

  17. There are rational reasons to vote either way, as we can all see from the comments above.

I don’t agree with many of Mamdani’s proposed policies but I want the best for him because it will mean the best for our city. I hope the community around us can rally to do what we can to support the city and help Mamdani be the best mayor he can be.

He is rational (look at the campaign he’s run, a successful optimization engine) and has already made decisions which I think indicate he is willing to take a more centrist approach on things that are working well based on initial hires (e.g. keeping Jessica Tisch on, bringing Lina Khan on).

I hope we can all think about where in the ven diagram we overlap and help the city thrive. We can do that at the same time as pushing back on issues we care about with rational and reasonable arguments. This neighborhood is wonderful on a day to day basis, we are all good people with different perspectives that make this city what it is.

  18. Am a bit surprised at the extent of votes for Cuomo.

Actually a number of people we know did not cast a vote for mayor or else wrote in – Brad Lander, Kathryn Garcia and others.
One neighbor who voted for Brad in the primary voted for Cuomo very reluctantly.

Anyway am guessing that Luxury Real Estate will not need to worry and that this administration will do deals just like deBlasio etc. Mayor Mamdani has noted his support for City of Yes and the housing proposals.

While most City progressive elected officials message the need for affordable housing (yes), few seem to pay any attention to actually maintaining affordable housing and helping residents keep their housing – such as when landlords vacate/warehouse apartments to sell buildings for teardown or landlords keep apartments in deplorable condition.

  19. Everyone commenting here realizes Cuomo is a democrat? Actually Mamdani is the imposter who basically laughed in the face of the democratic party by voting on the Working Parties Line.

  20. Of course TriBeCa chose the corrupt politician who targeted nyc relentlessly as governor. Congrats Mamdani – I voted for you in Tribeca!

  21. Replying to JSA:

Interesting note, though please keep in mind the intricate and fluid relationships among NYC’s many modes of travel — not just for-hire vehicles and bicycles, but also cars, subways and buses.

Consider that congestion pricing has led to a double-digit rise in fare trips in yellow cabs. Why? The drop in private cars has made taxis a better bargain twice over: by making taxis faster (less traffic) and cheaper (less “wait time” on the meter), more than offsetting the impact of the additional 75-cent surcharge.

In the same way, expanded biking infra (which btw was not a Mamdani campaign plank) could redound to taxi drivers’ benefit. Even if it doesn’t, the benefit to the drivers so far from CP (which, btw, Mamdani vigorously supported, unlike Cuomo, who waffled, and Sliwa, who opposed) has given him some wiggle room.

And this too: all things equal, a more prosperous city — which Mamdani did campaign for — will be good for cabbies and Uber drivers alike. Anyway, stay tuned!

  22. As a city that is has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, despite the poor choices for mayor, we still could not vote for someone that doesn’t believe in Israel’s continuing existence.

  23. I have lived in Tribeca on and off since 1979…45 of the 50 years since my move to this fantastic city. The reveal of the pro-Cuomo stat is the first time I have been embarrassed about living in Tribeca….maybe I’ll have to go back to telling people what I told them in 1979 “ I live past Canal St”…,back to the days before we had Whole Foods and 4 star restaurants ..where our escapes were to the Mudd Club and the Odeon….where we used to find solutions to our problems with our neighbors…where there was more respect for women and what we did on our own AND there were a lot of women who moved down here on their own to create their world, and were admired for what they did…I consider it part of the history of NYC women….it was pioneer days down here. WHAT the hell happened to this once magical abandoned neighborhood???
Vote for Cuomo???? What is happening here? Can the water in Tribeca be checked?

  24. Ms. Benzinger, please take heart and continue to thrive in this depressingly changed neighborhood. Still more than a few fine female (and male) artists and creatives huddling in old lofts. I am male and have lived down here since before the real estate industry dubbed it “Tribeca” ( the first death knell). Long discussions at the Delphi, standing on the street lunches in front of “Gus, the Sausage King”, co-ed volleyball on the weekend-empty parking lots … And now, as the world turns … we need you and others more than ever.

  25. … and I’ll continue to drink the water (filtered), but not the KoolAid …
