The Art Newspaper reports that Stephen Friedman will close its eponymous gallery on Franklin and Cortlandt Alley in February 2026. It’s a beautiful space — in fact I took all these photos and just never got to writing it up when they opened.
The gallery opened here in November 2023, of course part of the booming Tribeca Gallery District — my guesstimate is there are more than 70. Friedman has had a London gallery in Mayfair since 1995, and represents nearly 40 artists in the areas of conceptual and South American art, abstraction, minimalism and figuration in painting, sculpture, video and installation. The artist and Indigenous activist Santiago Yahuarcani has a show up until mid-January.
From The Art Newspaper: “According to a statement from a spokesperson for the gallery, the decision to ‘conclude its New York programme’ marks a ‘strategic evolution for the gallery as it consolidates its operations in London’—where several new directors have recently been hired. In a statement, Friedman says the move will allow the gallery ‘to focus our resources on the areas where we have the greatest impact and flexibility, working internationally, cultivating deeper relationships with a strong London base.'”
