P. wrote in February: “I was walking the dog tonight and noticed the lights on at 161 Duane [northeast corner with Hudson]. Perhaps this long vacant space may finally be getting filled.” (David Bouley closed his eponymous restaurant there in 2017, after nine years.)
So I started asking around — emailed someone who lived in the building and checked records etc etc — and didn’t come up with much. But then I heard two reliable tips: one that Todd Snyder was taking a space in the neighborhood for a home collection, and one that a men’s clothing line took that space at Duane and Hudson. And then C. sent the photo below of a port-a-john, which is a sure sign of construction.
UPDATE: I was wrong! I heard from a representative of the company that the brand is not engaged in that location.
So I put them together to create an unconfirmed (I sent two emails earlier this month with no reply) report that Todd Snyder is coming to the Mohawk Building with furnishings or the like.
There is one real problem: from what I can tell, Snyder does not *have* a home collection! Or at least not yet. But I sure like the idea!
(Oh and the other problem: I could totally be wrong.) UPDATE: Indeed I was. So!! I still can’t answer the question. Comment if you have a clue…
Snyder started his eponymous brand in 2011 and took the Liquor Store space at 2 White in 2019. As head of menswear at J.Crew, he created the J. Crew Liquor Store in 2008, at the time an original concept that offered a curated selection of apparel and lifestyle products. J. Crew closed that store in 2018, so when Snyder was expanding his own brand, he snagged it. At that time, all the furnishings, sourced from 1stdibs and ABC Carpet, were also for sale. Maybe that’s the idea…
The designer does fun collabs with classic brands like Champion, New Balance, Timex, Moscot and LL Bean.
I understood from a neighbor that the portajohn is there for repairs to the roof
