Nosy Neighbor: Why does the corner of Warren and Greenwich smell so bad?

I have to admit this is my own Nosy Neighbor, after walking with pals from the Downtown Community Center, but I have to assume I am not alone on this one. Every time I pass by the old Gee Whiz corner it smells horrible. I was pretty sure it was coming from the catch basin there on the northeast corner of Warren and Greenwich so I checked in with the press office at NYC Environmental Protection.

Within a few hours of my email, crews had already investigated and added deodorant to the catch basin. They are expected to return today to more thoroughly clean it, flush it out, and install a hood.

And the reason it smelled? Grease in the catch basin, which, of course, is not a surprise.

I asked my super about this and he said his friends who are plumbers say grease is absolutely the most noxious odor — worse than sewage! So there you have it.

  1. Add to this the northeast corner of Chambers and Reade Streets. Very often, noxious vapors come from a large grate in the roadway. This is not a new issue.

While the odor may not be as foul as the one on Greenwich, it’s no fun getting a face full of this mist.

  2. How is grease getting there? Is it being illegally dumped?

  3. Walk around Park Pl, Murray, and Warren between Church and Broadway and you smell grilled chicken grease. This has been going on for 10+ years. I thought

  4. I thought it was the smell from the people who go to Hobby Lobby who support bigotry and racism
