SPRING BLOCK PARTY AT BOGARDUS
Bogardus Plaza will host its annual spring block party on Saturday, May 2, from 9a to noon, with activities for kids sponsored by local organizations, live music, performances by and for kids, and refreshments.
SMORGASBURG COMING TO GOVERNORS
CB1 approved the liquor license for the Smorgasburg coming to the former Water Taxi Beach on Governors Island. It will be called Six Coasts, a celebration of foods around the Americas, and will cover 25,000 square feet wtih a capacity of 590. Hours go till 10 on the weekdays and 11 on the weekends.
BROOKLYN JAIL TOPS OUT
Obviously not local news, but relevant since we are getting one of these on White Street: the Brooklyn borough-based jail has topped out on Atlantic at the end of Cobble Hill. The BK version is a lot smaller: 15 stories, with a maximum height of 295 feet and a capacity of 1,040 beds. It has a projected budget of $2.959 billion. Construction began in November 2024 and is expected to reach substantial completion in spring 2029.
LILAC OPENS MAY 23
The Lilac, the light ship docked on Pier 25, will open for the season on May 23. Their first display will look at the history of OpSail as they plan to welcome tall ships from around the world for America’s 250th birthday. Later this summer an exhibit will commemorate the maritime evacuation on 9/11 as the 25th anniversary of the attacks approaches. There will also be viewing events for the tall ships on July 4th. Jails plan is so foolish and yet it goes on. There won’t be enough spaces to hold all the inmates, so they’ll end up having to keep Rikers open after all.
