Bike rider in critical condition after early morning collision
A cyclist heading northbound on Church Street was struck early this morning by a car heading eastbound on Franklin and is now in critical condition, according to the NYPD.
The call came via 911 at 5:41am. The 24-year-old woman was riding a Citi Bike as she headed north; a 54-year-old man and his passenger were in a Nissan SUV as they headed east through the intersection. The rider was taken by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals / Bellevue.
No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad. I will update this post later today.

The corner at that construction site is a nightmare! Now this poor girl is injured. There is no visibility going north or east. I blame the developers. Shame on the city for not requiring a better crossing there.
Robert is correct. The boarded fence around the construction at that corner eliminates the line of sight at the intersection. Very dangerous. This should be addressed.
As a bicyclist I never ride on that stretch of road even though it is the most convenient because of the lack of sight lines. They may as well close that block the way they have things covered.
I was passing my 6th avenue about an hour after this event happened. It was horrible. The car was damaged across the whole thing and the headlight was ripped off.
She was struck by a driver. The SUV has no agency.
Others are right about the bad sight lines there, but there is a light and responsibility depends on who had it.

I never liked the idea of bikes on the street
too dangerous- with that said nyc dob is
very lax in leniency towards developers
& mindful insight.
Yes, here visibility for the motorist was an issue. But beyond that is the leniency towards blocked bike lanes, even though that doesn’t apply here.
I don’t bike, but we need a more robust protected lane network for safety. I’m mostly a walker and mass transit user, and I occasionally drive, but I do believe in safety for all modes for all people.
As a Concerned bicyclist- Was there no traffic light? Bicyclist should pay attention to it, as must a car-driver…but no car should be going so fast they cannot stop from making an accident hit, especially on a narrow residential street.
In my experience, traversing the neighborhood daily
on foot, bicyclists ( and other wheeled beings) of all
stripes ( not just deliverers) consider stop lights and signs
to be optional. Every street crossing is potential danger.
There seems to be no attempt to address that.
