I am finally catching up to Maison Canal, the cannabis dispensary that opened in February in the triangle between Sixth and West Broadway just south of Canal.
Shlomo Weinstock opened The Flowery, the first cannabis shop on Staten Island, in 2024. An arrest at age 15, growing up in Brooklyn, made him eligible for the state Office of Cannabis Management’s Justice-Involved Priority list — granted to those who have been convicted of a marijuana-related offense in New York before 2021. But his experience providing edibles for cancer patients for the past 15 years made it his profession.
His plan is to make this space and his offerings here, however, a little different. (By the way, he won the heart bench at an auction.) He’s already had a comedy night and a tea tasting with Harney & Sons.
“I don’t want this to be a standard dispensary,” he told me when I visited in December. “A lot of the focus is smoking flower. We are looking more at the wellness side of it. We want to know how you consume and why you consume. We want to find out what you want from cannabis.”
Every visit, he said, will start with a consultation. And the staff will keep a record of what you bought so you can discuss it the next time you come in to see if it’s, well, doing the job.
“What we have been taught about cannabis is all wrong,” Weinstock said. “No one wants to walk out with a loud leaf bag. I want to create this new category that is not even called cannabis — it has something to offer for everyone.”
PS: He also wants to clean up the sad little GreenStreet triangle behind the shop… Here’s hoping!
