Rembaum Hanau will close at the end of the month

Rembaum-Hanau, the design studio and collection that opened on Duane in 2023, will close at the end of the month. This was an excellent addition to the Tribeca Design District, opened by two Downtowners — designers Sharon Rembaum and Cécile Hanau. They will keep the design business going, but will close the retail shop. (They are having a moving sale through the end of the month.)

This was the old Antiqueria Tribeca space — a great Tribeca legacy. It’s a beautiful space. (They also hosted the first Tribeca Women Business Owner’s cocktail party for me — and it was such fun.)

The pair first met as disciples of Daniella Ohad, the design historian. Sharon, a former broadcast journalist for the BBC, pivoted away from that decades-long career and completed the UCLA Interior Architecture and Design program to pursue a lifelong passion. Cécile, a French native, has an expertise in textiles after an education at the École Camondo in Paris and Parsons; she has spent her working career at the House of Scalamandré, as a creative director for home textiles firms, and as a design consultant in the hospitality industry and for private clients.

“What we like is the mix, that’s the fun of it for us,” Cécile said when we first met in 2024. “That’s what people hire is for, the layering, to create that story.”
