ShoutOut: The volunteers and neighbors who brought us tulips

I am a little late to this, but with Washington Market Park’s longtime gardener now retired and not replaced, the annual Planting of the Bulbs was handled by a handful of volunteers from the Friends of Washington Market Park and neighbors from BMCC who sunk thousands of bulbs to create this year’s spring display.

There were a total of 7100 tulip, allium and hyacinth bulbs. And they added a tulip hill this year as well, with 2700 bulbs donated by New Yorkers for Park’s Daffodil Project. Those will return next year.

The Friends volunteers got an assist from a team of professors from BMCC, who planted tulips in front of the middle playground; another group of students from BMCC, who sunk the daffodils in front of the community garden and along the Greenwich Street fence; and a relatively new park cleanup group called 4TheParks, which planted the daffodil hill near the gazebo.

“Thanks to this TRUE community effort, it’s been a lovely spring bloom in the park!” said Erica Martini, a member of the Friends.

Spectacular.
