Where to watch the World Cup in the neighborhood

Unless you live under a rock, you know now that the FIFA Men’s World Cup is in the Americas for five weeks this summer, with some matches playing in what they are calling New York New Jersey Stadium — a rebranded version of MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. The first match is on Thursday, June 11, in Mexico; the final, on Sunday, July 19, will take place in New Jersey. The US’s first match is Friday, June 12, in LA. (That’s the first shot of the team, taken last week at Pier 17.)

The city has tried to make some accommodations for the crowds; only time will tell if they work!

Here’s how to watch outside or in public:

Wagner Park | June 12
The BPCA will host several FIFA World Cup watch parties over the course of the tournament, with the first on June 12 at the new Wagner Park for USA vs. Paraguay. The kick-off event will include a family-friendly tailgate party and an electrifying performance by the Queer Big Apple Corps Marching Band. More info here.

The Battery | July 5-19
From July 5-19, BPCA and the Battery Conservancy will co-host in The Battery starting with Round of 16 through the Final on a big screen. There will also be games, music, and all-ages activities.

NYC PAC | Perelman PAC | June 12-July 19
PAC NYC will host viewings on the Dalio Terrace — which you enter through Marcus Samuelsson’s restaurant, Metropolis — for select matches starting June 12 and running through the final. But you do have to buy at least one drink. They will cancel for rain. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to match kickoff. See the schedule here.

Brookfield Place | June 28-July 19
Brookfield Place will host a three-week soccer festival called Match Day Live running daily from June 28 through July 19 from 11a to 7p. The free experience will take over the Winter Garden into a large-format viewing experience for 22 pivotal matches with soccer activations, a soccer pitch and a Garden Bar presented by Stella Artois. There will be fitness sessions, pickup games, youth clinics, an arcade with foosball and other soccer games, and a digital target practice zone. The live match broadcasts will cover 22 matches across 15 game days, culminating in the quarterfinals (July 9-11), semifinals (July 14-15), and final (July 19).

And the big citywide events, just in case you wander north:

Rockefeller Center | July 5-19
The FIFA World Cup 26 NYNJ Host Committee, Telemundo and Rockefeller Center will host the official NYNJ World Cup 26 & Telemundo Fan Village at Rockefeller Center from July 5-19. From the rendering they have on the site, it looks like the skating rink will be converted into a turf field for fans. Learn more here.

Central Park | July 19 Final
The city and the state are funding a $9.5 million watch party for 50,000 fans in Central Park with three large LED screens, immersive sound, live entertainment, and local food vendors for the final on July 19. There’s a lottery for tickets; info on that will be released here on June 11 with Global Citizen.
