ICYMI, the speed limit is now 20 mph

The city Department of Transportation enacted a new “Regional Slow Zone” for everything south of Canal — including Canal — as of last October as part of Sammy’s Law — and I am just catching up to the news. Can’t say I have seen a new mph sign around? But I did confirm with the DOT, since Lower Manhattan is not on their list online. Our zone is now 20 mph.

Google Maps still shows the speed limit as 25, but I finally spotted a 20 mph sign in front of Washington Market Park.

The speed limit is 15 next to schools, including a dozen in Lower Manhattan.

Lower speeds reduce crashes and also decrease the chance of fatalities when a crash does occur. This is an old story from Wired, but it explains the physics — and impact on the human body — pretty well.

  1. This is great. However, needs more signage, and needs actual enforcement!

  2. We could use some additional signs saying No Right on Red in NYC. I know they are posted at the highway entrances at the city line, but (to be kind) non-NYC drivers may miss them or never see them if they rent a car in NYC. In the past week I’ve almost been hit by a car at the corner of Reade and Hudson and by a truck who ignored the red right turn light at the SW corner of Warren and West. Neither was trying to run the light. Both had fully stopped and then proceeded as if right on red was legal even though I was already crossing in the crosswalk. The truck driver had the decency to apologize after I yelled out “no right on red” and pointed to where his red signal was, but that didn’t balance out the scare he gave me when he crossed very close behind me.

  3. Now if we can get the folks on scooters to observe the limit.

Which brings me to our little friends on their three wheel scooters. I love that they have the freedom and thrill of the ride. But some are moving right along (fast), and I’m concerned some older adult gets hit.

  4. With this speed limit we should get speed bumps too. There’s no reason not to have them if the limit is 20 or even 15.
