I had to get in one last post: Tribecan and sports photog Arlo Dobbie was in pole position on Murray and Broadway starting at 5a and caught all the action as the players rounded the corner into City Hall for their ticker-tape parade yesterday. (The TC was rejected for credentials for the parade and ceremony; Arlo was clutch.)
I caught the aftermath on Church Street. Big kudos goes to the Department of Sanitation, whose street sweepers performed their synchronized ballet to get most of the millions of bottles and cans left behind by the millions of fans.
It’s not cause for celebration that the Department of Sanitation did such a good job. It’s sad that people trash the place like this. It doesn’t have to be like this.
People did not “trash” the place. NYC temporarily removed the litter baskets as a public safety measure. Out of 2 million spectators, at least some percentage are not going to carry away their trash for miles until they find a litter basket.
“some percentage” dropped their trash instead of carrying it to the next available trash receptacles. And days earlier, “some percentage” lit a school bus on fire, amongst other noble feats.
They have the option to carry the trash (as well as option of not bring so much trash-producing stuff to the parade; I would never bring any unnecessary items to a crowded event like this), and they choose not to do it. So they littered. That is, they trashed the place.
It does not have to be this way.
Some percentage should have gotten fined for littering. But that never seems to happen. In all my years in NYC, I’ve never seen anyone get a fine for littering. So much of the city (I see you, Canal Street area expanding deep into Tribeca and Soho and Chinatown) is a trash dump with litter blowing every which way..
Trash baskets on West Broadway between Chambers and Franklin were removed for the event and have so far not been returned. Just sayin’
impressive pictures arlo!!!
Wonderful photos! What was condition of City Hall Park across the street?
I think it is fair to say that with a crowd that size there will be trash unfortunately.
But it is also true that many people just dropped their trash wherever.
I was around Fulton-William etc after the parade at about 1:30 – and folks were just dropping trash on the street. Not even looking for a trash bin.
Soda done – drop on the sidewalk or street.
The Mayor campaigned on items that he suggested New Yorkers should be “entitled to”? – like lower rent and free child care.
Seems to me that the Mayor should also be regularly messaging about some basic minimums and core responsibilities for all New Yorkers – like not littering.
Everything was great about the parade minus “super fan” Zohran. In last year’s debate he was asked to name any current players – which he failed to do – yet during his “speech” recited Knicks history as if he’s been a fan his entire life. I am calling BS on this actor!
Oh stop it.
Unbelievable photos! Thanks for sharing!
