Woman assaulted on West Broadway in broad daylight

This took place in April, but the 30-year Tribeca couple is still reeling from its effects and I thought it was worth recording here: On April 30 shortly after noon, a 59-year-old Tribeca woman was walking east from the southwest corner of Reade and West Broadway — at Bogardus Plaza — when a man came running north in the traffic lane and hit her — hard — in the face, knocking her to the ground. She sustained injuries to her face and head but refused medical attention at the time.

The police report said there have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

The couple was able to acquire security footage from Bluestone Lane — diagonally across the intersection — which shows the assailant as he runs by, knocks her to the ground, and then continues up West Broadway. The footage is very grainy — you can see the white arms of the man’s jacket circled above.

The couple recently appealed to Councilman Christopher Marte for intervention: they do not believe the NYPD has fully investigated the incident. The police did, the family said, conduct a photo identification session (which proved inconclusive), but the victim was unable to identify the assailant from the photo array.

“A violent offender who acts in broad daylight in a busy neighborhood and faces no investigative follow-through is likely to act again,” the husband of the victim wrote to the councilmember. “We have been proud residents of this district for three decades. We remain so. We simply ask that the neighborhood we love be treated as one where a violent assault warrants a complete investigation.”
