In case you didn’t catch this in all the dailies, A 43-year-old former US Army soldier was arrested for setting off the fire at 26 Federal Plaza yesterday, but not before he injured one man as he was headed to an immigration hearing. (The Post has a video here.)

The FBI’s New York Field Office assistant director, James Barnacle, said in a news conference yesterday afternoon that Andrew Arrabaca, a mechanic on Patriot missile systems, was interviewed and now is in federal custody and awaiting charges from the US attorney’s office.

“We know there were anti-government and anti-American statements made and an incendiary device and gasoline were used to make a fire,” Barnacle said at the news conference. He said the suspect told officers that his goal was to target the building but that he was ok if people going in or out of the building, whether government employees or civilians, were hurt or killed.

In addition to fireworks and gasoline, the suspect was also carrying a pellet gun, knives, a hammer and a machete. He fired pellets from the airsoft rifle toward the building, Barnacle said, before he was tackled by a security officer.

The one man who was injured by fireworks was taken to the hospital by the FDNY — but his injuries were not serious. The building stayed open after the attack, but a naturalization ceremony scheduled for yesterday was cancelled.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes the FBI, the NYPD and NY State Police, are collecting evidence.
