A new restaurant is already scheduled for the Casa Brazilian space for December — and as of last week, they are approved for the liquor license transfer from Community Board 1. Tribeca Jupira Lee closed Casa after a year and a half on Duane between Hudson and West Broadway.

I couldn’t tell who they were by listening to the meeting — their LLC is called Spring Street Restaurant — but a pal passed along a tip from Emily Sundberg’s Substack newsletter Feed Me and it seems the business owner is Julia Buchmiller, who worked for the Frenchette team — Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr — at their restaurant Wild Cherry on Commerce Street in the Village. Feed Me also reported that her partner is sommelier Erik Bodenbach.

There were not a lot of details presented at the community board Licensing Committee meeting, but they bought out Jupira’s lease, and they have signatures from the four tenants upstairs and of course that space has been a restaurant for a couple decades (before it was Khe-Yo, which opened there in 2013, it was Duane Park).

The business plan figures on a $90 per person check average, they said. They do not plan on applying for Open Streets, but they expect they will do the one or two tables allowed for a sidewalk cafe eventually. She said that Casa’s concept was more lively; this will be a standard sit-down restaurant.
