A protest is scheduled at the Independence Plaza garage
A group of neighbors is organizing a protest at the Independence Plaza garage on Harrison, where, they suspect, ICE is storing vehicles. The protest is scheduled for Monday, August 3, at 5:30p, on the corner of Harrison and Greenwich.
The garage is full of unmarked giant SUVs with no license plates — and it’s hard to guess at another use other than undercover enforcement. They learned more than I did when I did this post; according to the flyer, some federal agency has a contract with Icon for the garage. (The press reps for Independence Plaza sent me to Icon; Icon never replied.) The organizers told me that the use of the garage is under a federal contract.
The cars have been there at least since April, if Nosy Neighbor notes from folks are a good indicator. Icon leases and oversees all garages at Independence Plaza. In the case of this one, there is no Icon signage as there is for the garage across the street. (Also, I think the address there is actually 310 Greenwich, even though it is immediately west of the historic Harrison Street townhouses.)
The flyer notes that the CEO of Vornado Realty Trust, the largest commercial landlord in the city and also the majority owner of Independence Plaza, is Steven Roth. And Roth has been a devoted supporter of Donald Trump as an investor in his real estate projects and his presidential candidacy.

Why would you bring that to our neighborhood. The protest that is. That attracts those radical antifa groups to then set up shop and “occupy Tribeca”. We are better and smarter than that. You’re worried about “Antifa” coming to our neighborhood when we have actual fascists running the country. Get a grip and focus your attention on the true enemies who threaten your safety and your peace.
I also want to remind you that you live in Tribeca BECAUSE activists, weirdo artists, and other rabble-rousing “radicals” made it a nice place to live:
Loft laws driven by artists who pushed to change commercial zoning and improve living conditions for all.
Activists who successfully fought the LoMEX – which would ahve destroyed Lower Manhattan and decimated Tribeca’s solitude with asphalt and traffic nightmares – through protest, advocacy and raising a ruckus.
Rent strikes by IPN tenants; a 20,000+ strong antinuclear protest in BPC in 1978; radical progressive art exhibits/actions/performances on every street for decades.
I think you need to familiarize yourself with the radical spirit that has made this neighborhood a wonderful place, rather than defending those who spend their days driving around, kidnapping people off the street for deportation.
ON MY! Whatever will we do when people who don’t look like we do, who have less money than we do, who might even have different beliefs than we do, come to our neighborhood to protest injustice, intolerance and concentration camps in our own backyard. EEK! How will we survive having to share our sidewalks with “others”.
And perhaps you don’t realize this, but radical “undesirables” (like me!) live among you. they might be your neighbor. you might sit next to them at the coffee shop, or they might even teach your children.
The fact that you used the term “undesirables” unironically and as a way of describing people who protest is a bit of a tell for you. Wake up, because the people you don’t want to be here might just be the same people who protest when you are being rounded up.

I’m a 42 year resident of Tribeca (IPN, where this travesty is occurring), was in the first class in the “new” PS 234. Lost my first tooth in Commodities and my second at Hamburger Harry’s. This neighborhood has been a huge part my life and I’m absolutely entitled to care about what happens here. Sorry you’re on the wrong side of history but don’t try to pretend like yours is the only voice that matters.
The way the entity titled “Sandra” uses the word “yall” (8 times in two posts) suggests that answering the posts is quite futile. There is a high likelihood that there is no “Sandra” walking among us. If “Sandra” actually lives and breathes there are other indications that responding to those posts is futile.

My goodness, some people are so detached from reality in this city. I am as pro-immigrant as they come and sponsor visas for several amazing international individuals at my firm. However, anyone with common sense should realize that there are many people here illegally who shouldn’t be.
For example, Felix Rojas, who was just sentenced last month for raping a corpse at a subway station in FiDi. Or the dozens of illegal Nigerian immigrants on Canal Street funneling proceeds from counterfeit goods back into terrorist groups in Africa, who then use that money to oppress women and LGBTQ folks.
Not all illegal immigrants are victims or some virtuous individual in need of saving by a enlightened progressive. Some are just terrible human beings who ended up in NYC through a combination of terrible policy making and lax enforcement, and they should rightfully be removed from this country.

The problem is that’s not the issue at all because that’s not what ICE is addressing or the current administration. They arrested a nun on her way to mass who I am sure wasn’t going to murder anyone. Bovino had plans to deport tens of millions of people without due process. Miller is an outright racist whose speeches and proposed policies channel the kind of crap that you would expect from Nazis. If you really were interested in getting bad guys you would reform the immigration process with easy to obtain and monitor visas and prioritize family reunification, economic development and assimilation. The current government policy is just about random acts of cruelty to make America white “again.” You might want to take a look at your own family history to see that perhaps some of the same kind of bigotry was used against them.

Jimmy aside from the truth that the number is much lower and that included in that are people here legally as refugees fleeing genuine threats to their lives there’s the rather unfortunate fact that we, yes we, need the labor for entire sectors of our economy and the real problem is that since at least the era of significant labor shortages around World War II we haven’t exactly been honest about how we deal with that. No one in power is talking about reasonable changes to legal immigration, including work visas. Instead we exploit and harass decent people escaping poverty and violence using racist and xenophobic policies for political advantage. And, yes, it’s racism. And this nonsense about “your” actions leaves out the simple fact this is bipartisan neglect because no one in either party wants to fix the problem in good faith while a small part of the party in power wants to act dishonestly and unethically to gain power. What ICE is doing is not right. It’s also not serving the public interest, including yours.
