New Kid in Battery Park City: Fiolino

Battery Park City has a new fancy market in the former Terry’s space, and it has a serving window on the street! And gelato! Fiolino looks like it has a lot more to come but wanted to get a post up now for anyone headed over to Rockefeller Park for summer action.

The market offers a small amount of specialty items — Bianco DiNapoli pasta sauces, Matchaful products, Compartés Chocolate gift boxes from LA. There’s a corner with fun dog accoutrements — my favorite was the blue tennis balls. Handy! The offerings are around the same level of useful as Meadow Lane, which is to say not at all, but still fun and tempting. Again, there’s a lot of room on the shelves for expansion.

For prepared foods they have sandwiches, salads, overnight oats (those small containers are around $5), parfaits. And of course gelato in four flavors when I stopped by, with room for more. They serve Devoción Coffee (and sell it bagged). A small gelato is $6.50; a small latte is $6.

From what I can tell there is no digital footprint for Fiolino yet — no Instagram, no contact info on Google. Will update when I have it.

    I really don’t understand the hate for new stores like this, calling their offerings not useful. Do people not buy tomato sauce or eat prepared salads?

    Everyone in this city complains that everything is a chain and interesting independent retail is dead, but when somebody takes the risk—and it is a lot of risk—to open up a small store with unique products, people hate on it because it doesn’t fit some other test—too expensive, too different, too designer, not useful, whatever. Same story with Meadow Lane, Marky’s Caviar, etc.

    The community should be celebrating local businesses like these. I think it looks cool and I wish them success.
