Ronny Emborg will leave Atera on Worth Street this month

Ronny Emborg, who has been at the helm of Atera, the two-starred basement restaurant at 77 Worth, since 2015, will leave his position at the end of August, the restaurant announced.

“For the past twelve years, Chef Ronny Emborg has been the quiet force at the center of Atera — shaping our kitchen, our team, and the way guests experience our little corner of Worth Street,” the restaurant posted on its website. “With his sensory approach to cooking, Ronny turned each service into an immersive sequence of flavors, textures, and aromas that guests still talk about long after the evening ends.”

Atera opened in 2012 in the space where Compose was for eight months previous with the chef Matthew Lightner, who came from Castagna in Portland, Oregon. The price at the time was $150 per person (it’s now $325), and, in a fit of pique over having to keep shelling out for expensive meals, Erik Torkells launched a Kickstarter campaign to solicit donations for a review. In exchange for a poem about Atera, an amusing photo, a signed menu, or even an advertisement in this post, fourteen people donated a total of $325.

Three years later, Lightner left and Emborg was brought in from Denmark with — at 32 — an already impressive resume in Europe. The restaurant got its first two stars from the Michelin Guide in 2012 and has not lost them since.

“Ronny’s time at Atera has given rise to dishes that have become part of our shared memory: delicious bites like the cheese waffle with fermented mushrooms and truffle, luminous caviar compositions, and delicately balanced seafood courses that seem to disappear quickly,” the restaurant wrote in its tribute. “In our kitchen, Ronny has been more than an executive chef—he has been a mentor, a standard‑bearer, and a calm center in the middle of a very intense room. His steady, thoughtful leadership helped shape a team that cooks with precision and heart, and many of the plates you see today carry his fingerprint in their balance and restraint.”

More TK when they announce a successor.

Also don’t forget about Farra Wine Bar, Atera’s little sister in the storefront next door.
