Playto daycare will close this month

Playto, the for-profit daycare that opened on Hudson and Leonard in late 2024, has announced to parents that it is closing as of August 31. The reason, according to a note from the director, was limited enrollment, though parents believe the school was also not awarded 3K or Pre-K funding through the city. (The website still allows you to register for tours, but I confirmed with the company that the location is closing.)

The company was founded in Prospect Heights and also has a location in Battery Park City — in fact, parents can transfer to that location. The business is a start-up, though the founder is involved in another chain of daycares in Williamsburg.

“We are so devastated,” A. said when she wrote to tell me. “The director and staff are just the most amazing people. They are all now scrambling for jobs and we are scrambling for childcare.”

The organization did say in its note to parents that they are looking to place staff at alternate sites.

The Portfolio School moved to that space in 2019, after opening on N. Moore in 2016. When the school was scheduled to close in 2023, a group of parents and teachers tried to save it as a coop, but that never came to be. Playto then took the corner. It’s a beautiful space.
