Last week I reposted a story from The Broadsheet about local schools’ PTAs’ ability to fundraise (conclusion: they rock). But in the days afterwards, I was sent corrections from PTA presidents at two different schools, so I thought it was worth correcting the record here.

Chalkbeat, the nonprofit news organization that covers education, published a list of all the PTAs in the city and the amount they raised in fiscal year 2025; local schools do it better by tens of thousands of dollars than just about anywhere else in the city. But the Chalkbeat numbers were also wildly off, against what is reported on the PTAs’ 990 tax forms (I checked them on Candid.) For instance, the chart said Peck Slip School PTA raised $52,511 when in fact they raised nearly $200,000.

“Of the money PTAs raised last year, the top 30 schools, or just 2.5%, raised nearly half of the total amount of the 1,240 schools included in the recently released Education Department data for the 2024-25 school year” Chalkbeat wrote. “Meanwhile, roughly 390 PTAs — about a third of the schools — reported raising no money last year, suggesting their parent-teacher associations are inactive or struggling.”

The story goes on: “PTAs in Manhattan’s District 2 [that’s us], which includes such affluent areas as the Upper East Side, Greenwich Village, and TriBeCa, brought in the most money, with nearly $18 million in total income. That was 600 times greater than what PTAs raised in District 23, which spans Brooklyn’s high-poverty neighborhoods of Ocean Hill/Brownsville. PTAs in District 23, which is also one of the city’s smallest districts, brought in about $29,000.”

So, to the numbers, from highest to lowest for assets reported in Fiscal Year 2025, which ended on June 30, 2025.
