I noticed that there were two new trash cans in Bogardus Plaza — and when I checked in with the Friends, it turns out it was the initiative of Apollo Bagels, not a new branding campaign from Bogardus.
A couple of weeks ago when the Friends of Bogardus Plaza contacted Apollo to complain about the amount of trash its customers were depositing in the park, the bagel chain responded immediately, acquiring the two new cans and agreeing to help the plaza with its maintenance costs.
Now, of course this should be the typical response of a local business — and not worth a news story — but we all know it often doesn’t work that way. The Kings folks actually always swept out front, and the dry cleaner that was once on the corner of Warren and West Broadway did the same. Otherwise, I rarely see folks maintaining the sidewalks. I recently watched a porter at a building on Greenwich use a leaf blower to blow all the trash into the street.
Apollo has had lines out the door — they now even have a velvet rope! And despite a press release I received saying they were making all their bagels in Industry City, they are still baking them fresh at the corner location here.
