A 77-year-old man was killed last week when a pick-up truck failed to navigate the Manhattan Bridge exit ramp as it merged with Canal and jumped the curb. Two other pedestrians were struck as well. The victim was Jun Ye Ting of Madison Street.

The incident occurred at 10:20 in the morning, when a 2001 Chevrolet 3500 Flat Bed, operated by a 66-year-old man, was traveling westbound over the Manhattan Bridge on the inner roadway. As he entered Canal Street, the truck mounted the curb, striking a 52-year-old woman, a 71-year-old woman and and Ting, all pedestrians. The driver continued onto Bowery and struck a 2015 Dodge Ram van, operated by a 47-year-old man with a 32-year-old male passenger, before making a final stop at the corner of Bowery and Hester Street.

EMS responded and transported pedestrians and the van occupants to NYC Health + Hospitals / Bellevue, where Ting was declared dead. The truck driver remained on the scene and was not injured. As of last week, there are no arrests at this time and the investigation remained ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

Councilmember Chris Marte called on the city to accelerate plans to fix the traffic problems of Canal Street — and not just on the west side. “The Department of Transportation has been inching forward with a plan to fix Canal Street, but starting at its least fatal end,” he said in a press release. “This is the third life lost in just over a year. These people are not statistics, they are beloved by their family and friends. Chinatown has suffered for too long, and I hope that this administration can honor these lives through swift action before Canal Street claims another life.”
