Seen & Heard: Protest today for ICE shooting

PROTEST TODAY FOR ICE SHOOTING
There will be an emergency protest for the ICE shooting today at 5:30p in Foley Square, organized by Hands Off NYC. Oscar Belgal was shot in his car in Marble Hill, with a 5-year-old boy in the back seat. I used to cover this neighborhood: it is as residential as it gets — densely packed row houses and apartment buildings. ICE officers fired seven rounds. Read more anywhere; here is Gothamist’s coverage. A quick Google says there has only been one other ICE shooting in the city, in 2020.

OPEN ARTIST STUDIO TOUR
The artists at 368 and 373 Broadway will host a free Open Studio Tour on Saturday, October 17, from noon to 6p. There are 36 artists participating. More info here. As a sample, the work of Joanne Freeman, above.

HALLOWEEN AT THE SEAPORT
I will add this to the general Halloween post too, but in the meantime, the South Street Seaport Museum will host free general admission on Halloween from 11a to 5p, with a spooky scavenger hunt aboard the 1885 tallship Wavertree. And from 11a to 4p, Pier 16 will host a Healthful Halloween Fair with Mommy Poppins with crafts and free samples of healthy Halloween treats. Then at 2p, there’s a costume parade followed by trick-or-treating throughout the Seaport from 3 to 5p.

MARCO MAGGI AT BIEVENU STEINBERG & C
Bienvenu Steinberg & C is showing “Higher Perplexity,” Marco Maggi’s 11th solo exhibition in the city, on view through November 14. Maggi’s work (which is not reproducing well here — you have to see it in person!) is composed of linear pathways reminiscent of circuit boards, aerial views, genetic engineering and nervous systems. It is in the collection of museums around the world, including MoMA and the Whitney.
