Seen & Heard: A gift from our northern neighbors

A GIFT FROM CANADA FOR THE US’S 250TH
The Canadian government gifted two Canadian red maple trees to City Hall Park as part of a nation-wide acknowledgement of the country’s 250th birthday. Trees are also being planted in Washington, D.C. and across the 13 states that span the U.S.-Canada border. The gift was presented by the Consul General of Canada in New York, Susannah Pierce, to the right of the tree, who took office in September.

THE MARATHON IS SUNDAY!
As if Halloween isn’t enough, the TCS New York City Marathon — always held the first Sunday in November — is Sunday, with the broadcast starting at 7a (the first wave leaves Staten Island at 8a.) on ABC 7. See the list of street closures here, though nothing is closed Downtown — it’s the other boroughs you have to worry about.

BLOOD, SWEAT & ART — AND BOXING
New York artist Calicho Arévalo is co-curating a show at Trinity Boxing Club titled “CHAMPIONS: Blood, Sweat & Art” with Bailey Lalonde, daughter of world champion Donny Lalonde. The opening event is Saturday, November 7, from 6 to 9p. The night is a mix of art and boxing, bringing together visual art, exhibition fights, performance art and live music. World champions, including Donny Lalonde, will join the evening, and rising New York fighters are invited to attend. RSVP here.

MAKI KATAYAMA AND HIKARI ONO AT BORTOLAMI
Bortolami is presenting the work of Maki Katayama and Hikari Ono, organized by Richard Aldrich, opening today through December 19. The opening is tonight from 6 to 8 at 39 Walker. Maki Katayama’s paintings examine systems of order, drawing on Sanzo Wada’s A Dictionary of Color Combinations, the landmark 1930s publication that synthesized traditional Japanese color sensibilities with Western color theory. Hikari Ono’s expansive body of clay sculptures, collectively titled Object for Painting, are conceived as a series of fundamentally tactile paintings.
