In the News: More on the counterfeit vendors of Canal Street

THE SENEGALESE VENDORS OF CANAL STREET
The Times has another feature on Canal Street, this time on the Senegalese vendors, who, they said, “have adapted with a relentless sidewalk hustle, sustaining their families through street vending.” “Even if I have to sell water and make 50 cents out of every bag that I sell, I will do it,” Abdoul Azez Kasse told the Times. “I will do it because I believe that here, work is worship.” With the weeks and resources they spent on that story, I wish they delved into the real power structure in that market…

ANOTHER CONVERSION FOR FIDI?
The Commercial Observer has a story saying that plans have been filed with DOB for a 99-unit rental at 160 Pearl, between Pine and Wall. The Full Shilling, which opened there in 1999, is on the ground floor. The bar inside is 100 years old and came from a bar in Belfast.

BILLIONAIRE BUYS IN 111 MURRAY
The Wall Street Journal reports that Fashion Nova CEO Richard Saghian bought a $31 million penthouse at 111 Murray. The apartment is five-bedrooms, 7,700 square feet, with a 2000-square-foot great room. He also has a $126 million megamansion in Bel-Air.

THE ROW AND ITS $1 BILLION LABEL
If you can get past the paywall, (I can’t) The Observer has a story on The Row, the company that has taken the former Issey Miyake space on Hudson. Trying to get more info… Miyake left that space after 24 years.

  1. Some puzzling and inconsistent aspects about the NYT article on street vendors from Senegal.

For example, the article made little mention of asylum situations, instead indicating the economic focus and hope to attain the “American Dream”

Also the article mentions generically that “they” flew from Senegal to Mexico and then made the journey from Mexico to the U.S border. The article does not mention why “they” did not fly directly to the US (and presumably request asylum?)

The article did not indicate if the reporter conducted all interviews directly and what language or if an interpreter was used?
