Seen & Heard: The Fancy New Starbucks

••• Anonymous tip: “I was at FiDi Wine & Liquor behind a Beekman hotel worker who said they were putting a club-type space with a DJ in the basement next year. (He mentioned it would be like The Box.)” This isn’t a new rumor, but that it’s still alive bears mentioning. It’s certainly something anyone buying in the Beekman condominium—or the two adjacent buildings under construction (1 Beekman and 23 Park Row)—would want to know about.

••• The BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center kicks off its 2016 family season on Oct. 22 with “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

seaport-district-warning••• Press release: “Fosun has announced that it will donate, for a second year, 35,000 square feet of office space on the 24th floor of 28 Liberty to the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council for its Workspace artist residency program. The 28 Liberty space will be converted into approximately 30 artist studios, meeting rooms, common areas, and dance floor/rehearsal space.”

••• Peter Murphy is playing City Winery on Dec. 11: “Performing as a three piece ensemble, with Emilio ‘Zef’ China on bass and electric violin and Nena guitarist John Andrews, pared down arrangements of his songs from throughout his career.” I used to own “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” on blue vinyl….

••• Alerted by Dave that the Starbucks at Brookfield Place had opened, I hustled over for a look. It’s definitely the most attractive Starbucks in the area, and possibly the most attractive space in the mall. It’s branded “Reserve,” which seems to mean the coffee is more precious, but the food looked as awful as ever. In any event, it’s great news for locally owned Babesta, which now has two neighbors (Drybar is the other one) that are the kind of business people visit regularly. UPDATE: “This new Starbucks includes the Reserve bar concept serving the company’s Reserve coffees; their line of small-lot coffees from around the world,” emailed a rep about the 3,500-square-foot space. “The reserve bar welcomes visitors to chat with coffee specialists to discuss these global brews, alongside their beloved menu seen across the country. This Starbucks Reserve is the first of its kind in Manhattan.” (Dave, I asked about the chairs. Stay tuned.)

  5. Why is the Starbucks food described as awful?
I am not a fan of their coffee, but the sweets were good as I recall.
