When Renaud Vuaillat started out at Paris’s Serpette market, he focused on 18th-century decorative arts. But in 2000, a year after opening a gallery in Paris, he was bit by the contemporary bug. Since then, he has increasingly been drawn more toward living designers, and when he moved to New York City in 2006, he opened Twenty First Gallery in Chelsea.

Now the gallery has relocated to Tribeca, in the former Franklin Street home of George Taylor Specialties plumbing supplies. Vuaillat says he was drawn to the area, taking note of the many galleries and design showrooms opening here. After clearing out the space, he sanded the floors and more or less left the walls as is, the better to showcase the furniture in the middle of the room. The Chelsea location, which was in Vuaillat’s townhouse, was by appointment only, so the new space allows for many more shows. The artists in his stable are mostly French, and works are nearly always limited-edition, often created exclusively for the gallery. The current show, of work by Maurice Marty, is up till June 29.
