New Kid on the Block: Innovation Shades

After being in the window-treatment business for 15 years, Tribecan Tom Abikzer founded his own company, Innovation Shades, five years ago. First based on Vestry, and then temporarily in Chelsea, Innovation Shades now has a spiffy new showroom at Laight and Hudson, in the southern half of what used to be a Valley National Bank branch. As you might imagine, the company needed a space with a fair amount of windows.

The offerings include solar shades, blackout shades, honeycomb shades, draperies, and blinds. The solar shades have been hung in order of opacity (from 1 percent to 10 percent), so you can gauge which is right for you. Shades and draperies can be motorized, either hard-wired or powered by rechargeable batteries, which last 12 to 18 months. And true to Innovation Shades’s name, you can even check out the latest technology in action: A phone app with which you can raise and lower your window treatments.

Innovation Shades is at 48 Laight (at Hudson); 212-343-9900; innovationshades.com.
