••• Elephant visits the Tribeca home/studio of Cecilia Vicuña, “a noted poet and author in addition to an activist and artist. She’s been in exile from her home country of Chile since the early 1970s, when a military coup resulted in a violent dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet that finally ended in 1990. Her work, both verbal and visual, rests heavily on the importance of reclaiming ancestral traditions as a tool of resistance, exemplified by raw wool installations and sculptures known as Quipu, which reference the ancient Andean system of recording statistics and stories through a complex knotting of coloured thread. She also explores the power of intuition and activism in the face of oppression, patriarchy, white supremacy, totalitarian rule and ecological devastation.”
••• A New York Post article on buildings with “insane perks” includes “63 Wall St. (rents from $2,635 to $6,686), where management has converted offices in the former headquarters of bank Brown Brothers Harriman & Company to an on-site bar dubbed a ‘speakeasy.’ Decked out in grand Roaring ’20s style with wood paneling, chandeliers and a custom brass-and-marble bar, the spot, which officially opens next month, is ideal for unwinding with an adult beverage and some light snacks. But to knock one back, you’ll need to live in the Financial District building—or at least know someone who does. The bar, serving beer from $5 and cocktails from $12, is open to 63 Wall residents and their guests only.” I don’t even like riding the elevator with many of my neighbors—I can’t imagine partying with them. Also, the landlord isn’t even subsidizing the booze?

••• A New York Times article on a playground in the Chelsea part of Hudson River Park says that work at Pier 26 will start in August.
••• Vogue profiles Gitano, opening tomorrow. “With chefs Yvan Lemoine (of Bodega Negra and Union Fare), and Mads Refslund (of Noma and Acme), the food will focus on super-fresh Mexican dishes such as ceviches and guacamole with pumpkin butter and pistachios. The signature Mezcal cocktails will include the Gitano margarita, and Kisses in the Car (with passion fruit). To respect the local Hudson Square community, there will be brunch, lunch, and dinner, with an early closing time of 11 on weekdays, and midnight on weekends, no DJs, and absolutely no dancing, a neighborhood requirement that, says Gardner, pushed him to raise the level of absolutely everything else.”
