In the News: Gitano Is Moving Indoors

••• Gitano is going to open a winter version inside the James Hotel. A bold move, since being outside was like the only appealing part of the place. —Eater

••• We’re a week into December, and still not a peep from Downtown Express. It’s strange that Schneps Communications would buy the property and just do nothing with it….

••• Architectural Digest says 70 Vestry is a masterpiece. The art installation in the lobby is interesting.

••• Alex and Miles Pincus of Grand Banks are taking over the “outdoor concession space” at the Fulton Ferry Landing (in Brooklyn, next to the Brooklyn Bridge) “and will turn it into a ‘seasonal cafe and bar,’ according to a news release. A restored ‘vintage’ fireboat will be docked there to add more seating.” Also, Ample Hills will run the ice cream store at the landing. —Eater

••• “Conditions for turn-of-the-century garment workers at 44 Lispenard were harsh. The owners were repeated charged for filthy, odorous restrooms.” —Daytonian in Manhattan

  1. Bob Stern doesn’t do “masterpieces”…he does nice, reasonably tasteful buildings that fit into the vernacular of their surroundings. 70 Vestry is fairly typical of his approach and it’s…nice, unobjectionable, better than it could have been. That’s Stern’s modus operandi.

  2. Downtown Express continues to publish in print every other week, exactly the same as before. Downtown Express articles, for now, can also be found online on the site of a sister paper of Downtown Express — The Villager. Downtown Express articles will continue to be published in both print and online. The company’s online platforms are being retooled and their will be a rollout soon.
