Il Mulino, which opened on Greenwich in 2018, is now Il Giglio — and yes, it’s not a coincidence.
Starting at the beginning, the original Il Mulino opened in the late ’80s on West 3rd Street; that restaurant is still operating. This location was developed by the current owner, Jerry Katzoff (who joined the Il Mulino owners in 2002 as a partner), starting in 2017, when he took the lease. It has now been separated from the other and is its own entity — don’t call it Il Mulino!
In addition the change in name, Katzoff is hoping to create a bit of a different vibe. He wants Il Giglio to be a go-to neighborhood place — less business dinner, more kid friendly, a bit more casual (though it’s still white-tablecloth and still expensive — the mains are between $48 and $68; the pastas in the high $30s; the salads in the low $20s), with a modified lunch menu — smaller portions, lower prices — for a quick bite. Stay tuned to see that menu.
There is a direct line between this and the original Il Giglio — which was on Warren for 26 years until it closed in 2015. The owner of that restaurant, Rose Masci, partners with Katzoff now.
The day-to-day operations will rest with general manager Rubi Sanchez (above), who was at the Il Mulinos for 20+ years as well as Elio’s on the Upper East Side, so his resume in the restaurant world is particularly focused on high-end Italian. “He is the perfect guy to run this,” Katzoff said.
Much remains the same: it still has the lovely outdoor tables on the diamond plate within its leasehold; a private room downstairs for smallish parties (up to about 18); and the extra long and gracious 20-seat bar. That, Katzoff hopes, will also become a welcoming spot for drinks.
The interior design, with its white-washed brick and high ceilings painted matte black — is still airy and bright and modern, with those very special hand-blown glass pendants at the entrance that make it feel a bit SoCal. The one nod to the new: a bit of street art on the menu and the back wall, but again with the reference to the Tribeca of the early 1990s.

They want to be kid friendly? The prices are extremely high $51 for a chicken breast? $21 for an salads caprese?
$31 for tomato and mozzarella starter… $51 for chicken parm… seems pretty aggressive.

FOR 2 IN THE MIDDLE OF 2 PARTIES OF 5 – 6 PEOPLE ON
EACH END. I ALWAYS BRAGGED ABOUT THE VEAL CHOP IN IL MULINO, IT WAS A DISGRACE THAT NIGHT. I HAVE TRIED
FOR 1 1/2 YEARS TO REACH OUT TO AN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE, THE LINE WAS CONSTANTLY BUSY, & NOBODY IN
IL MULINO WAS ABLE TO GIVE ME A TELEPHONE NUMBER TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. WE ATE IN THE IL MULINO IN THE VILLAGE & THEN WHEN WE FOUND OUT THERE WAS ONE IN MID-TOWN & WE ALWAYS ATE AT THE BAR IN BOTH PLACES.
WE WERE NEVER DISAPPOINTED UNTIL XMAS EVE 2022.
