C. asked: What restaurant will be at Wagner Park? Will it be Gigino again? (Gigino had a satellite restaurant there for more than two decades, from 1999 till the park closed for construction in 2022.)
The answer: we don’t know yet. The operator for the new pavilion will be finalized over the next month, with an anticipated opening date in the first half of 2026. In the meantime, the Battery Park City Authority plans to have a mobile food and beverage options available in the park when it reopens on July 29.
The BPCA had to ditch its first request for proposals for the pavilion for reasons I do not know — they then rereleased it with a deadline of Jan. 15 for a 5000-square-foot space that will occupy the bulk of the newly constructed pavilion. The renderings are from the RFP.
The restaurant will be on two floors, with indoor dining for 80 on the “main floor” — which is at the park level, which is now elevated off the street — along with two bathrooms and 775 square feet for outdoor dining. The other half of the restaurant will be at the street level, underneath the park essentially.
The building will also have a community space in the north wing, and a rooftop space that is 5300 square feet — proposers were invited to suggest food and bev ideas for the adjacent spaces as well.
