Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, the studio founded by Floyd Mayweather Jr. that opened on Reade in 2023, is closing. A member forwarded the note that the gym will be closing on closing on October 31.

“It is with heavy heart that we share some difficult news,” the email to gym members said. “After giving our very best and exploring every option, we have made the decision to close our beloved Tribeca studio. This decision did not come easily — we tried every avenue to keep going — but what remains strongest is our gratitude for all of you who have made this community so special.”

The studio took the lease of the former Exceed Physical Culture space at 97 Reade and Church in early winter 2022; the opened their doors in January 2023. The company is a franchise, and in 2022, they had an outlet in Midtown and on Long Island. It seems the Midtown location is also closed.

Exceed left that space in October 2020; they took over the eastern side of Bell Bates in 2013.

L. said the trainers were exceptional and “have built a true sense of community with a very loyal member base” but were blindsided by the closure.

A quick boxing education: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (his father was also a boxer) competed between 1996 and 2015 and is regularly ranked among the top boxers of all time, pound-for-pound. He’s won 15 major world championships from super featherweight to light middleweight, a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics and three U.S. Golden Gloves championships. Over the years, he was also regularly ranked as one of the highest paid athletes by Forbes and the highest paid pay-per-view athlete of all time.

Mayweather opened the first studio in 2018 in California.
