The Starbucks on the prominent Tribeca corner of West Broadway and Chambers, in the bottom of the Frederick Hotel, will close tomorrow. There’s a sign on the door — and it tracks with the corporate announcement that the chain will close 250 stores across North America.

This one opened in 2000, according to the database Starbucks Everywhere.

There are 18,000 Starbucks, so this is just 1 percent of stores. But it also includes 99 Wall and 100 William, a reader just told me. They closed more than 600 last September, according to the AP.

“We have carefully reviewed our North America coffeehouse portfolio and identified locations where we do not believe we can consistently deliver the experience we want for customers and partners or where we don’t see a path to acceptable financial performance,” COO Mike Grams announced yesterday.

Over the past couple years, there has been a retraction of Starbucks in the neighborhood: the West Street location closed in September 2025; the location at Greenwich and Franklin closed the week before that. West Street opened in January 2024, just before the Greenwich location. In 2024 we lost two others: the one inside 32 Avenue of the Americas at Sixth and Walker, and the one on Broadway and Reade.

Back then — two and a half years ago — the company was gunning for more outlets: the goal was to add 17,000 locations by 2030 to reach 55,000 globally. (The company was founded in 1971 in Seattle, and by the time it went public in 1992, it had 165 stores. By 1996 there were a 1000 stores, including some in Japan Now there are about 36,000 stores globally, and about 350 in the city. The first one here, on 87th and Broadway, opened in 1994.)
