In the News: Terror Threat

••• Could’ve seen this coming: “New York set-up vehicle checkpoints and increased subway searches as Vice President Joseph R. Biden reiterated that a specific, credible, but unconfirmed report of a threat was being investigated.” (New York Times)

••• Damon Dash news in the Village Voice: “At around 4:30 p.m. yesterday, cops served the property [172 Duane] with a court summons and order to show cause. The defendants, 172 Duane Street Realty and ‘Jane and John Doe’ (the tenants, i.e. Dash and associates) are accused of six counts of storing and selling alcoholic beverages without a license, as detailed in court documents obtained by the Voice. DD172 was caught violating the liquor code for the first time in November 2010 and as recently as May, according to the affidavits of police who investigated the club. One document states that the violations ‘were conducted in an open and notorious manner and the operators of this establishment appear to have evinced a ‘business as usual’ attitude in the subject premises.’ DD172’s repeated violations are used as evidence that the club’s actions constitute a public nuisance. The plaintiffs are asking for a preliminary injunction from the judge, plus a restraining order.”

••• “Two new preschools will open in Manhattan next year, one in the Tribeca-Battery Park City area and the other near Lincoln Square, Schoolbook, a joint New York Times and WNYC news site, reported. Gabriella Rowe, the head of the Mandell School on the Upper West Side, plans to open the two schools. Rowe, a former investment banker, said she commissioned demographic studies showing that those neighborhoods saw above average population and housing in the past 10 year based on census records.” (The Real Deal)

••• The BPC Block Party will have a dress-up-like-Lady-Gaga contest. You could always look for a costume here…. (Broadsheet Daily) That reminds me: I saw Martha Stewart’s Halloween magazine at B&N the other day. I think she’s dressed up as Lady Bunny!

••• NYT review of Alexandra Bircken’s show at Kimmerich.

••• 1WTC no longer 1,776 feet. Expect outrage in the hinterlands. (New York Observer)

••• A diner at Brushstroke tweeted about a DOH inspector’s visit. The kicker is something; it’s like Entitled vs. Entitled. (Eater)

••• Because of all the rain, the BPC ball fields are now opening Sept 17. (DNAinfo)

••• WNYC’s Leonard Lopate interviewed David Bouley, Drew Nieporent, and Michael Lomonaco about 9/11 and its aftermath. The interview was interesting enough, but what really struck me was how Lopate had clearly not been to Tribeca in at least a decade. “Is there a sense of community there now?” he asked in a way that made it seem like he doubted the idea.

••• The New York Times has a mega slideshow about the World Trade Center. It includes this photo from 1971 (by William E. Sauro). Seeing the towers is always moving, but this photo makes me imagine if all those streets hadn’t been lost….
