Newsletter: Jan. 29

Please forward this to anyone who might enjoy it. Also, if you decide to act on anything here, for Pete’s Tribeca Citizen’s sake, tell the business where you heard about it.

Not for sale! Asha Agnish photographed the shopdogs—and one cat—who spend their days “working” at neighborhood businesses. The favorite, if the comments are any indication, is Fred at Steven Amedee’s Fine Custom Framing (left).

OPENING SOON
••• Tamarind Tribeca: Like the original Tamarind in the Flatiron District, but “spicier.”
••• The new Cosmopolitan Café: Free crepes and Champagne this Saturday night.
••• TriBeCafe, from the owners of Greenwich Grill—a sweet, well-done restaurant, if you’ve never tried it—is now slated to open Feb. 8 or 9 (in the Church Street space that was home to Tokyo Bar).

Former ABC Carpet & Home buyer Cristina Dos Santos has opened a home décor shop at 39 N. Moore (right)—directly under the apartment she used to live in, years ago.

IN THE NEWS
••• School-zoning plan #2 wins.
••• Gusty winds halt construction on Beekman Tower and stop traffic all around City Hall Park—none of which quite explains why the NYPD was asking for ID just to allow people within the perimeter. Which leads us to…
••• Bloomberg finally gets the message about how disruptive the terror trial would be for lower Manhattan. The NYPD hasrejected Governors Island as unsuitable, so the Obama administration is considering its options.
••• St. Vincent’s Hospital might stop handling “acute care.”
••• CB1 chair Julie Menin decided to run again after all.

la-lumia-newsletter-by-tribeca-citizenSTEALS AND DEALS
••• La Lumia‘s sale to benefit Haiti ends today. Jackie Sencion’s store/showroom (left), now on Park Place, was on Church, next to Kori, from 1985 until last February.

THIS WEEKEND
••• Ugly Betty (which just got canceled) is shooting all over Tribeca today (Friday), and taking up much of the parking, so your Escalade may have to wait elsewhere.
••• Tribeca Cinemas is having a party for Haiti tonight.
••• New in theaters: Edge of Darkness (which kind of reminds me of “The Edge of Night,” the old soap opera…) and When in Rome. Oh, well—there are still plenty of good movies left over from the end of 2009.
••• Soho Rep’s Lear, a deconstruction of Shakespeare’s tragedy, has been extended through Feb. 14.
••• Tomorrow is your last day to check out Jeff Zimmerman’s spectacular  glass artistry (not sure what to call it…) at R 20th Century on Franklin.

happy-science-newsletter-by-tribeca-citizenIT’S BIG IN JAPAN
I met with the CEO of Happy Science USA, the “new spiritual movement” whose North American headquarters is on Franklin Street. I can’t say I get it, but he was very nice, and he showed me around the premises, including the prayer room (right).

COMING UP
••• Poets House has released its 2010 winter/spring schedule. My favorite is the event titled “How Does a Bird Imagine? What Does a Tree Know?”
••• On Mar. 1, City Winery will host the rehearsal for the Who tribute at Carnegie Hall. Tickets on sale now.
••• Wine classes and tastings at New York Vintners and Maslow 6.
