When I posted Yvonne Babineaux’s photos of Tribeca in the 1980s, I promised I’d go out and take “now” shots for comparison’s sake. Here’s the second batch.

    It’s amazing how little has changed in this group of images.

    Thank Historic Districting for keeping the before and after pictures so similar, othewise everything would have been largely torn down and replaced with sky-high highrises (just think of the unprotected edges of Church Street, Broadway and Warren Streets). The leader in this fight was former City Councilwoman, now judge, Kathryn E. Freed. Sadly, what so many of us loft dwellers didn’t foresee was how saving these lowrise buildings would cost us in losing low rents. The only thing keep us here is are the loft law we won, which preserves our buildings under rent stabilization. Otherwise, while Tribeca looks pretty, it came at a very, very, very high price for artists and other early pioneers.

    I have a 40″ X 40″ painting of the Staple Street Bridge, highlighting Jay Street. I am wondering if any of the first four photos above are available for sale? Especially the first and fourth ones?
