It is wonderful to see this ship preserved, and we all hope that she can be restored to a semblance of her former beauty and grace, whether as a restaurant or other attraction for the public. Couple of historical notes: my ancestors were directly involved in her construction and sailed as Captains and deckhands when she was known as the Edwin and Maud, who are son and daughter of its first Captain, granduncle Robert Edwin RIGGIN (not Riggen, b. 1855, d. 1925 in Bethel, Delaware). The ship was constructed in Bethel, Delaware which to this day maintains a small Maritime Museum together with the Bethel Historical Society. Between them they hold voluminous material regarding her construction and use in its early days. Alas, the waterways leading to Bethel now could never accommodate a ship the size of the Victory Chimes, what with new bridges and constricted waterway access, but it is well worth the time and effort to pay a visit to the small town of Bethel for a sense of history surrounding this ship. Last time I checked majority still rules in this country. If you don't like the election result or Mamdani's policies, you're free to move elsewhere. New York City will be just fine. In fact, we will thrive in the long run like we always have. This City is just so incredibly resilient. This election was about turning the page and a generational shift away for the politics of old (because the politics of the last 40-50 years have really not done much for our society as a collective). It's time to embrace change. If you look at the Wall Street Journal's article entitled "The Voters Who Propelled Mamdani to Victory," you will see that it was voters under 50, who make less than $300,000, and are non-white which overwhelmingly supported Mamdani. That is the majority in this City (and the people who make it run day-to-day) and Mamdani's message of affordability, inclusiveness, and his gifted politics skills resonated with those groups and, frankly, with many of Tribeca's millionaires. There are very few homeless here in Tribeca. I have lived in Tribeca since 1987. And the few that are here, have been here for years and are recognized by our neighbors, and harmless. I, for one, am excited to see a mayor-elect who clearly loves the city, recognizes what makes it work, and reflects its beautiful contradictions and diversity. There is a whole, living, breathing city outside of Tribeca, Manhattan below 110th St, and Brownstone Brooklyn. It will also be nice sending a corrupt, bullying sex pest who hates the city and doesn't live here into the dustbin of history. I started exploring Tribeca in the late 1970's and began working here full time in 1980. I remember the old hotel before it became the Cosmopolitan, then the Frederick. It's name then was the Bond Hotel, and it's fame was that it housed "permanents and transients. The joint, of course, was classy, as anyone who peered into the entrance could immediately see the bulletproof enclosure at the front desk! Tribeca still had a bit of its raw edge back then, when some loft buildings had small businesses. It was not unusual to find lock and key wholesalers on Warren Street, and refugees from Radio Row on Chambers Street.
