I just learned that I know the woman who was hurt. She is absolutely lovely - and in no way has the financial resources to deal with this and there will be no real insurance for a 27 year old driving a rental car, which makes this a No Fault case. Please contribute to her GoFundMe campaign https://www.gofundme.com/aq3g7-support-for-sarah Thanks! — A. on In the News: Woman struck by car on Murray

"Forty-three TV shows and movies took $1.2 billion in New York state tax breaks from 2015 to mid-2018, state records show. "New York state sets aside a generous $420 million a year for tax breaks for film studios that make movies and TV shows in the state. "That’s more than any other tax break program in New York state. [...] "Taxpayers give movie and TV studios 30 cents for every $1 spent on production in New York City. The state reimburses 40 cents for every $1 spent on films in Onondaga County and other designated areas outside New York City. "The tax credit is refundable. That means film companies that don’t make enough money to owe income taxes in New York state can ask for a check instead of reducing their nonexistent taxes." At the link below you can also see "the 43 movies and TV shows that have claimed the most from 2015, when the names were first released, through the first half of 2018." https://expo.newyorkupstate.com/news/g66l-2019/02/8539e909ed234/ny-taxpayers-have-given-12-billion-to-these-43-tv-shows-movies-in-last-four-years.html — James on Seen & Heard: The Odeon in the 1930s
Excellent point. Let's not lose sight of the fact that willful ignorance and blindness to an event can often make us feel better about a terrible situation while simultaneously requiring zero action on our individual part and giving us an air of moral superiority. Horrible service? What is it with you awful, cranky people! Most of the retail staff at Whole Foods and other places I shop are downright lovely. A smile, a quick conversation. Most of the retail staff in the Soho shops are very nice as well. What is the problem? I'm going out on a limb here but you complainers are the problem. Stay home and talk to your robots. They may be the only "individuals" that will put up with you. — TG on Amazon Go opens in Brookfield mall
Yeah, but how much $ are we talking about? I've often wondered. Not sure with all my reading I haven't gotten a really clear idea but as I mentioned before; it is murder for small businesses. Their presence destroys productivity. — TG on Seen & Heard: The Odeon in the 1930s
So true - these film shoots are murder for the remaining small businesses. I used to run a design store in Soho in the 90's and Law & Order loved our street and director would actually put his chair in our door frame!!! Potential shoppers couldn't get in or out unless we escorted them. Guess how much $ our business received from these crews? Zero!!! I get that the grunts on the street have a tough job trying to control cranky NY crowds but enough already. Indeed they do not received any tax payers $ but they have been saddled by criminal demands created by Washington politicians to advance pay their pensions to the point of almost collapsing under the weight of it all. I wonder who was paying off those politicians? Look into it - shocking in a democracy. — TG on Eyesore of the Week: Mailboxes of Tribeca

I like them... it's a form of art for me and reminds me that I live in NYC where people are free to express themselves in different ways. Yes, if you really want to dot the i, it is vandalism, but on such a minor level...on a mail box. It has a history. In the art world, some graffiti sells for millions. If you desire perfectly clean and shiny neighborhoods then let's talk about the construction and the thousand rats running around the street... that's serious and can bring a huge health risk. Grafiti and stickers on post boxes.... let it rest. IMO. — MariposaRosa on Eyesore of the Week: Mailboxes of Tribeca

I biked by that night, a couple hours later; the car was still there, in the far right southbound lane, but not quite in the crosswalk.
