  • Re: Holland Tunnel Noise and Traffic This is something we are also actively working on in CB2 further east on Watts St, specifically at 6th Avenue. We already have a proposal unanimously approved by CB@ that has been sent to the offices of Corey John and Margaret Chin. Luis Sanchez unfortunately is part of a major bureaucratic organization called the DOT that refuses to take responsibility for anything caused by traffic that affects quality of life in our city. You can read more information below. • The guys at Soho Tree's (on both Greenwich and the one on Spring and 6th) are the worst. I bought a tree on Greenwich last year and it was dead within the month. The year before I bought the most beautiful tree I've had from the one on Spring, but at a price of $200. Never again. Funny enough I was at a bar with one of the Soho Tree salesman who was telling me how they basically make up prices, saying "If we dont like your face, it's $20 extra." — Sean on Seen & Heard: Shopping for a Christmas Tree

  • That block of Canal has been a graffiti-laden dump with vacant store fronts. It is on the precipice of actually being a block worthy of walking down (shake shack, duane reade, shoe store), and the Preservation Commission is willing to impede the progress. They should step back and actually think about what (if anything) they are preserving, before rejecting positive development. — Anonymous on In the News: Quarterback Colin Kaepernick Bought in Tribeca

  • We bought our tree from Whole Foods for the past 3 years. I know you looked there and didn't think their trees are big enough. I have to say they have the best "first-grade" trees in the area, with a great price to match ($65 for a 7.5 - 8 foot tree!). The tress I've purchased at Whole Foods look and smell great up until MLK day. Yes, you do have a wait a bit in line but everyone who works there is super nice and don't want to rip you off. I've bought trees from the Canadian on West Broadway and Leonard, and a 6 ft tree is $100 and dries out and dies before Christmas. — HH on Seen & Heard: Shopping for a Christmas Tree

  • The New York Times: "Newsstands of Tomorrow Get Mixed Reviews Today" AUGUST 29, 2008 "They are like extraterrestrial visitors in the tired streetscape, gleaming new stainless-steel-and-tempered-glass newsstands that carry grand lighted advertisements. They’ve been dropping onto the sidewalks of New York — quite literally, as cranes swing them down from flatbed trucks. So far, 97 of 330 have been installed. [...] "Cemusa, the Madrid-based advertising company that has a 20-year street-furniture contract to build 3,300 bus shelters and 20 pay toilets, is also handling the newsstands, replacing the hodgepodge of largely nondescript and sometimes shabby newsstands that have long been staples of the boroughs. "Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has enthusiastically endorsed not only the new Cemusa street furniture, but also its revenue potential. The city has already received $118.4 million, and Cemusa has guaranteed at least $1 billion over two decades." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/30/nyregion/30newsstand.html — James on Holland Tunnel Traffic Impacts

  • And regarding that one, has anyone else noticed how blinding the electronic sign on the back of it can be? Makes you wonder if the real money in those things is advertising space rather than trying to sell gum every 50 feet. — NV on Holland Tunnel Traffic Impacts

  • As a neighbor of Steve's, I have known him for over 30 years. He is a very nice, interesting, intelligent man, just trying to live his fragile life, while facing incredibly overwhelming challenges. Since the unfortunate postal incident of a year and a half ago (in which I doubt that he was trying to "steal" his own mail), he has received much personal and agency support to move him along in his Life's journey. Rather then condemnation, a smile or a friendly "Hello!" to him would be a more appropriate response. — Zada Rose on In the News: Tribecan Accused of Attacking Postal Worker

  • Serafina on one corner of Reade & W. Broadway, new Super Linda on the other??. Ward lll (when it reopens) and Sazon a few feet away. What 500ft rule? • I have only been to Warren 77 and Tiny's more than once but I was not crazy about either. ( I looked at Super Linda's menu once but it didn't appeal to me). I find Tiny's tables too small to be comfortable. (The chairs aren't generally comfy either for a nice extended meal.). And 77 is really only a stand up bar with a few tables. Super Linda is a nice space but I don't hold out much hope that he'll do something that the neighborhood can REALLY use. Too many "cocktail" spots a trendy places for outsiders. Not enough places for those of us in the nabe, in my opinion. And it's ONLY my opinion. — Janet on A New Restaurant in the Super Linda Space

  • I hope they don't make the same mistake as before with Super Linda... red velvet rope... exclusive attitude... rude staff... once the novelty ran out they had lost any neighbourhood customers with the obnoxious attitude — charlie on A New Restaurant in the Super Linda Space
