  • The fact that Nobu was able to get a three-month extension past its initial end date would lead me to assume that no one has rented the space just yet. Been wrong before, of course.... — Erik Torkells on In the News: “Nobu Downtown” Opens Next Week

  • My 12 year old son was assaulted and knocked on the ground by them. My other son witnessed them steal from a store. I think one of these teens goes to IS 276. — ANON on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

  • Yes. "One of the buyers listed on the deed is the 'Carmen E Maestro family trust.' Carmen and Maestro are, of course, Bigelow’s two beloved German shepherds." https://therealdeal.com/2015/03/13/kathryn-bigelow-buys-tribeca-pad/ See the deed info here: https://a836-acris.nyc.gov/DS/DocumentSearch/DocumentDetail?doc_id=2015020900999003 — James on Seen & Heard: Taste of Tribeca Tickets Are on Sale

  • Any news on what will replace Nobu? — ManhattanMommie on In the News: “Nobu Downtown” Opens Next Week

  • I've been in touch with BikeNYC. They were generally responsive. I had a promise of answers to my concerns to their revised plan. As yet, no answers to the following: 1. Will there be prerecorded music as in past years? 2. How big are the speakers and what will the volume be? Fewer speakers but larger/louder would not solve the problem. 3. Will there be someone on site who residents can connect with if the sound is again disruptive...someone who can be responsive? Is there anyone who is interested in joining me in contacting the police who are the ones who issue the permit for the sound? — S on Seen & Heard: Taste of Tribeca Tickets Are on Sale

  • Also, there is more and more dog poop on the sidewalks these days. Why have pets if you can't clean up after them..... it's just nasty!! — KV on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • NYC 311 phone app for complaints currently has nothing for garbage/recycle (only Rat or Mouse Condition or Illegal Dumping). This needs to be changed since these problems cannot reported. — Cathy on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • The 'trashnado' that forms on Greenwich st. between North Moore and Harrison is due to the open garbage cans and high winds. I have to cover my eyes on windy days so trash doesn't get blown into them! I contacted the DSNY to ask for covered cans for the corner and was denied. — B on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • Correction: Floors 2-6 — James on Seen & Heard: The Name of the New Kids’ Store

  • 484 upstairs is going to be a single residential unit comprising floors 2-5, i.e., "each of the five floors represents 1/5 of the total" 1 unit. The proposed occupancy classification is "R-3 - RESIDENTIAL: 1 & 2 FAMILY HOUSES." — James on Seen & Heard: The Name of the New Kids’ Store

  • It doesn't even do that well. See my previous comment here: https://tribecacitizen.wpengine.com/2017/02/08/nosy-neighbor-why-is-there-always-trash-outside-the-post-office/#comment-105313 — James on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • Much of the refuse (on my block, at least) is due to the trash pickers tearing open our carefully sorted bags. The best solution is something like what they do in Barcelona ( http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f1sAmiqCe7E/U9ZNtXZ5cXI/AAAAAAAAGuU/nA6RHMiLYLQ/s1600/recycling.jpg ) it would mean giving up a parking space every couple of blocks but would end the need to pile trash on the street and would eliminate cans and free up sidewalk space. — J on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • Both the actions of the kids, and the reactions of the community are ridiculous. Toilet-papering a car is 'kids being kids', damaging property and assaulting people with rocks and spit is not. Learning that there are consequences to our actions is an important lesson for kids to learn, even those born with a silver spoon in their mouth. And who is this "youth officer"? If he is familiar with these kids than why doesn't he have a chat with their parents? I'm sure Mommy and Daddy would love to know what their special snowflakes are up to while they are slaving away to pay for private school tuition and $6000 rent. If these kids are interested in gangs than I suggest a field trip to Rikers. I mentioned this to the doorman this morning and he told me that just last week a group of kids were throwing rocks at his car and he recognized one of the kids that lives in the building. This little 'gangster' was not from the projects in the Bronx, he was from 21 South End. — Andrea on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

  • Chances are most neighborhood teens know at least one of these kids---geniuses have pics on social media (trying to appear menacing as "TMW", which is laughable)...some of these kids go to privileged HS like Xavier...or live in the high rises of Tribeca on the fringe of BPC...parents (a select few, who are in total denial) of teens should know who their kids are out in BPC late at night with (as they want to avoid guilt by association)-only a matter of time until something goes awry with the multitude/magnitude of incidents described in this chain. Either an innocent is really going to get hurt (which will mean big trouble for one of these kids), or these "toughs" will get cornered when not in a group by someone tougher. Way too much energy being spent on a bunch of cowardly punks — SRthelandscaper on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

  • The only thing the DSNY does well is ticket Tribeca. All the BS tickets my building received is one of the main reasons we installed a camera outside so we can have proof to dispute those tickets. Also ACE has withdrawn from Soho and Tribeca and that has hurt. — Adam on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • It is time for NYC to enact 24/7 trash removal. Many European cities have it and I am always surprised no mayoral candidate pushes this idea on their agenda. It will create more jobs, alleviate the trash problem, and might even help with the rats. — Mike on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • Whether anyone considers them just unruly neighborhood teens looking for trouble (and an overreaction)...or part of a more serious "gang"...we have seen these same kids waiting for passing cars, to then throw rocks and items at them ...there are SO many toddlers and little kids in this area crossing the same street...it would just take one bad mishap for something really terrible to happen. — TL on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

  • If anyone is attending the community meeting this week, can you find out what they suggest people do with photos that will help I.D.? I have seen several photos of "supposed group of teens"-some who definitely live in this neighborhood, others who probably do not, but they hang together, as well as photos taken of teens who were causing trouble but may or may not be part of the group. — TL on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

  • Among the downsides: There are doubtlessly many people who would rather not have to touch a garbage can in order to throw something away. I have a vague recollection of the Downtown Alliance testing Big Belly compactors with foot pedals, but I don't know that I've ever seen one. — Erik Torkells on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • The streets are also a mess because the street cleaner can't do their jobs. Reade and Duane have city cars parked on them who don't move and the rest of the cars generally sit their un ticketed. — Keith on The Trashing of Tribeca

  • Regarding the main issue of this post, solar-powered trash compactors have replaced litter baskets on many street corners in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. (See 9/2014: http://www.downtownny.com/press-releases/the-downtown-alliance-expands-innovative-solar-powered-trash-collection-by-adding and 3/2016: http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/39/13/dtg-solar-trash-cans-2016-03-25-bk.html) Among the benefits: * They reduce the number of pickups required for a given amount of litter, holding up to 5x the litter * They signal wirelessly when a pickup is needed, making better use of labor to pick up trash from the full barrels instead of having to routinely check every barrel or increase pickups * They have an opening to put trash that limits the size of litter placed inside, discouraging their use for household trash * Their cost can be defrayed by advertising * By reducing litter they were shown to reduce rat burrows: "In New York, city-commissioned research supports the theory that BigBellys reduce rat infestations. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene commissioned its own rodent expert-in-residence, Robert Corrigan, and colleague John Johnson to conduct a one-year study in Thomas Paine Park in lower Manhattan, where the rodent population was known to subsist on food foraged from open trash bins. BigBelly Solar donated three compactors for use in the study, installed in March 2011 to replace three overflowing trash bins near 14 known rat burrows. A year later, only one of the nests remained." • Could not have said it better! — McGee on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update

  • I have witnessed a group of teens (few white, few asian, and one or two black/Hispanic) running through the battery park neighborhood wearing hoodies. They menace the neighborhood destroying signs at Brookfield and halting traffic. I've seen this same group with a short stocky Asian kid leading the pack. I noticed him as the same group of kids who pulled down their pants and mooning the on coming traffic on South End Avenue last summer. I've watched them violently running past families and babies with no regard making loud gang noise. I know for a fact, a few of them live in Battery Park because I've seen the one I recognize walking casually in the neighborhood without his gang of friends near Gateway. — Susan on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
