Salaam Bombay [CLOSED]
319 Greenwich St.
(bet. Duane and Reade)
More casual than fancy

As Bombay is a mix of people from many Indian regions, Salaam Bombay salutes its namesake by serving food from around the country—the menu lists a lot of dishes you’ll recognize, but a fair number will most likely be new to you. The restaurant is relatively subdued for an Indian establishment, with white walls, hotel-restaurant-style furniture, and a decorative canopy in the middle of the room. When the doors are opened in summer, the tables at the front offer people-watching along Greenwich. At lunch, the buffet is an excellent deal; you can also fill up a plastic container and take it to go (they’ll hand you a bag with a foil-wrapped nan inside).
