WELCOME TO THE ‘HOOD
Ford model Leo Funderburk has opened Leo’s Bar & Restaurant on West Broadway, in what used to be J. Marc.
GLUTEN FOR PUNISHMENT?
“We often mistakenly believe we can treat our illnesses with medicines or creams, but what if we could treat them with diet?” writes health and wellness coach Marissa Vicario. “Many of the annoying, chronic symptoms we feel and spend our lives tolerating may in fact be food intolerance or sensitivity.” Related: My 10-year-old niece, who is coming to New York for the first time in April, just learned that she has celiac disease. Anyone have advice on restaurants that can do gluten-free and will also appeal to a kid? Please send it to tribecacitizen@gmail.com. Thanks!
THIS WEEKEND
••• This weekend’s movies are here. I’m trying to get to see A Single Man, but I’d settle for Up in the Air or even Avatar in 3-D. I firmly believe that I’m not allowed to sit and whine about how banal movies are if I don’t support smart ones when they’re in theaters.
••• At Sasha Wolf Gallery: Russian photographer Yola Monakhov used Dante’s Divine Comedy as a framework for shooting in Italy (above).
••• Want to taste a $1,000-per-bottle of sake?
••• Tribeca Grill is one of a group of restaurants that will donate 10 percent of restaurant proceeds and 5 percent of server gratuities to Haiti earthquake relief on this Sunday night.
••• On Sunday and Monday is Magnetic Cabaret at the Bubble Lounge—”a Fantasia of Femininity, Fantasy and Expressive Force.” In other words, burlesque!
THE TCQ&A
Carrie Loewenthal, who recently founded a shopping website called Little Birdie, answers questions about Tribeca: her best celeb sighting (and her worst), where she goes for cupcakes, her favorite street, and more. Photo by Asha Agnish.
COMING UP
••• The Harrison gears up for Restaurant Week, Valentine’s Day, and Super Bowl Sunday (one of the restaurant’s special menus, however, looks like less than a good deal…).
••• I’m not sure what it says about me, but the February event at 92YTribeca—which just announced its upcoming schedule—that most intrigues me is The Real Cancún, a 2003 documentary from MTV about spring break in the Mexican playpen. That and Gosford Park, I hasten to mention. Also: Paul Rudd will be there (at 92YTribeca, not Cancún) on Feb. 4.
STEALS AND DEALS
••• Firefly, the kid’s clothing and toy store that has been a neighborhood favorite for three years, will be closing its Front Street location sometime in early February. In the meantime, everything is 40 percent off (and the clothes had already been discounted).
••• Through Jan. 24, get 10% off at Steven Alan (in store or online) and 10% of your total bill will go to Haiti earthquake relief.
IN THE NEWS
••• The New York Times and Tribeca Trib on Albert Capsouto, who passed away this week.
••• In a New York Times op-ed, CB1 chair Julie Menin makes a persuasive case why the terror trials should be held on Governor’s Island.
REAL ESTATE
••• Deals at 260 West Broadway, 200 Chambers, and The Fairchild.
••• Hotel updates: The James and Trump Soho.
••• 311 Broadway gets landmarked.
